Buyer beware. Terrible, do not purchase,
This review is from: Toshiba Satellite C655-S5090 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) (Personal Computers)
I bought this laptop thinking especially for the number pad thinking it would be almost as good as my last Toshiba. Within a month the power cable was shorting and by 3 months several of the keys on both the number pad and the keypad are no longer working. The numlock key is perpetually on - the light cannot come off. I would never recommend this laptop or any other Toshiba for that matter. Buyer beware

I ordered this laptop to replace one that had burned itself up. Gotta love those SONY batteries, eh? Anyway, this computer is fast enough for my needs, yet runs a lot cooler than my last one. I also like the Windows 7, compared to the Vista on my last computer. 7 is a lot less resource intensive, so the computer doesn't lock up as much as my old one. ALSO, I was pleased to find a 64 bit operating system installed. This allowed me to max out the RAM, making for much cleaner processing. The only negative here that this laptop only has 2 USB ports. Once I stick a pick=up for a wireless mouse in one port, and a thumbdrive in the other, I have no room for anything else... like an external hardrive or DVD=RW drive. That meant I had to buy a USB hub so I'd have enough ports.

For this price I did not expect it to be a speed demon. But it is too slow to adequately do some of the things it is supposed to. It is also suprising that it does not include any sort of digital video output (DVI, HDMI, or mini-HDMI) as those are becoming standard on all laptops and Windows 7 does make it incredibly easy to connect to an external monitor (Windows + P).I would beef about all of the bloatware installed, but that is just part of buying a Toshiba; expect to spend two hours or so uninstalling crap. But even when done, it was incapable of watching HDTV off an Avermedia USB stick (which is already integrated into Windows 7 Media Center) without pausing every few seconds. This is with no applications running, and even with the temp-ware virus software uninstalled. I eventually figured out that by deactivating Windows "Themes" (and with it, the resource-hungry Aero effects) I can watch HDTV but just barely - and only when plugged into wall power. I have to knock points off because this is an advertised and expected feature of the laptop, and lesser machines are able to do this without a hiccup. While you are watching TV, you'd best have headphones plugged in because the built-in speakers are tiny, tinny, and terrible. And without HDMI, you'll need a separate audio cable to connect to your monitor or TV. On the other hand, having a genuine full keyboard, with dedicated numbers, and squeezing them into a modest laptop without resorting to miniature keys is a pretty neat accomplishment, and the screen is excellent for the price.

Not my best experience with buying a computer. The Toshiba Satellite C655-S5090 web cam wasn't working (out of the box). Couldn't do recovery from partition; ordered recovery disks (free but shp. is $24.95). Used recovery disks to restore Satellite to factory state, still no web cam. Circuit City didn't have any replacement Satellites; since I didn't want a refund, I had to send to Toshiba repair center. I had to pay shp. one way ($20.00). They've had it a week so far.

I absolutely love this laptop. The only problem was that it did not come pre-installed with an Ethernet controller drive so I couldn't hook it up to my Ethernet cord. The driver was available on the Toshiba website, however, it was a huge inconvenience. Otherwise it is awesome. One thing that people might dislike is the keyboard. It has a weird feeling to it and I wasn't used to that. After a while I got used to the feeling so it was fine. The good thing is the numeric keypad which makes entering numbers easier. Windows 7 is an awesome operating system and so that makes the laptop 10x better. Overall I love it.

Item included the specs in a laptop that I was looking for. I gave it as a christmas present to the wife and she was quite happy. The web cam has already come in helpful since I am away from home alot and we can chat for free. Set up was easy and so far no problems or surprises.

I bought this for my 12yr old for X-mas last year and it has worked out pretty well for $350 I am a happy camper. I went in knowing what this was going to be used for and I looked for a system to meet her needs. Video chat, web browsing, Facebook and music were going to be primary functions and using MS Office for school was also a big need. This system performs all of these well right out of the box.I uninstalled a few of the preinstalled programs, pretty suprised at the lack of "bloatware" Toshiba put on this thing to be honest. It was a welcome suprise and saved me some set-up time. System runs at a decent speed while chatting and listening to music, but it does slow down when playing DVD's and chatting but nothing to bad. After adding another gig of ram DVD playback has improved and multitasking is flawless. I dont really understand the review about not having an HDMI port and such, this is an entry level laptop and the specs support the price. If your looking for a movie editing/gaming powerhouse this is not the system for you. These are my pros and cons. Pros Price $350 for this laptop was a steal. Built in webcam. Win7 64bit pro. Screen, this thing has a fantastic screen for the price. Number pad on the keyboard. Battery life, its at about 4hrs running IE and listening to music. DVDs kill the battery very fast though. Quiet and cool. Cons The lid has no support along the bottom, it flexes a lot and could crack if your not careful. Toshiba installed diagnostic tool, nice to monitor your system but becomes overwhelming if you dont adjust the settings. No lock for the lid, it just flips down. No dedicated media keys, this is just me though my last 2 laptops had the keys on the outside front of the laptop. Speakers are on the light side.
