Called Toshiba Customer Service, since the laptop is still under warranty. They told me that this is considered damage to the laptop and I'll have to pay $175 to repair what is clearly a manufacturing problem or defect. Whoever heard of a laptop where you couldn't open the drive without unplugging it?
I was told that I could contact a case manager, or whatever it is their title is - couldn't quite understand the person I was talking to - between 8 AM and 8 PM Eastern time, but that they were going to refer the matter and I should expect a call back. So far there's been no further contact with Toshiba, and the two attempts I've made to contact them myself have resulted in dropped calls.
The price of the laptop is good, but I guess the adage "You get what you pay for" applies. I've had Toshiba products before, including a top of the line laptop. Never had any problem with their quality before this purchase. But I can assure you that I will never own another Toshiba product, and advise anyone thinking about buying electronics to think twice about purchasing anything from Toshiba.
After 4 months and dozens of phone calls with hours on hold, we still do not have a repaired laptop. Total waste of money. We tried to be nice, cooperative, and patient, but that got us nowhere. Tried to get firm and ask for supervisor to help settle this "catch-22" and was told that there was nothing anyone would do to help. Repeatedly LIED to by people on the support line and transferred to wrong departments and given wrong numbers to call back or UPS. TOTALLY INCOMPETENT and UNRESPONSIVE.
I will NEVER buy another laptop or other Toshiba product again and I urge you to seriously consider whether you want to take the chance on never needing customer support or repairs.
