This notebook PC offers dual-core productivity from its 2.0 GHz 64-bit AMD Turion 64 TL-60 processor. It allows you to easily run multiple programs without bogging down your system, and it features intelligent power management for longer battery life. Other features include a spacious 200 GB hard drive, 2 GB of RAM (4 GB maximum), 5-in-1 memory card reader, 10-key keypad, and ATI Radeon X1250 integrated graphics (with up to 831 MB of dynamically shared video memory). The Basics

• Processor: The 2.0 GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 processor offers a dual-core architecture, which delivers additional computing resources to help expand your PC’s capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing--increasing your performance by up to 80 percent. You'll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly thanks to the innovative Direct Connect Architecture. And it's designed to handle simultaneous 32- and 64-bit computing with no degradation in performance. You'll enjoy long battery life thanks to the AMD PowerNow! power management technology, which delivers performance on demand and can extend system battery life up to 65 percent. And the AMD Digital Media XPress technology delivers stellar multimedia performance and playback on digital entertainment such as games, streaming video and audio, DVDs, and music.

  Each processing core has a 512 KB L2 cache (for a 1 MB total), and this processor can deliver up to a 1600 MHz system bus for lightning quick computing reflexes. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

• Hard Drive: The spacious 200 GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

• Memory: The 2 GB of installed RAM (2 x 1024 MB DDR2) will satisfy many users, but this notebook's two DIMM slots have a maximum 4 GB RAM capacity--perfect for high-end video editing and 3D gaming. It also offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. To receive the faster data transfer benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.

• DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer Labelflash DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x DVD+R DL, 4x DVD-R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD+R/-R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 5x DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.

  With the Labelflash functionality, you can burn high-resolution, high-contrast pictures on the label side of DVD discs using the same laser used for data recording. Enjoy transparency and high-quality not found in traditional printable media. All you need is a Labelflash DVD disc to start labeling without a printer.

Screen, Video & Audio
This Toshiba Satellite has a 17-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels (native 720p for high-definition viewing). It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the integrated ATI Radeon X1250 which provides between 128 MB and 831 MB of dynamically allocated shared graphics memory. This is the first chipset product to support ATI’s revolutionary Avivo display and video technology, producing the most vibrant images and smoothest video playback ever seen using integrated graphics, and the most true to life image possible for all multimedia applications. This chipset also handles the Windows Vista Aero user interface with ease, and stands up to even the most demanding multitasking environments.

This notebook also features an integrated audio card and two stereo speakers.

This notebook has an integrated Atheros 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. Toshiba has a solid build; they are tough & reliable. As a computer professional for over 30 years,
I've owned & worked with all major brands, including 'clone' PCs. The top corporate choice in
portable/laptop/notebook PCs is TOSHIBA. With new lower prices - especially the current deals on
Amazon - this, and many other Toshibas, are an excellent choice.

The only concern that I & my employees have is the OS: we prefer MAC OS, but we also use MS-XP
and MS-Vista. (the problems with Vista, although some still remain, are largely over-hyped) So, if
you're going with the MS operating system, then you might consider getting your new Toshiba with
MS-XP and upgrading to MS-Vista later. (Toshiba offers this option.)

I love my present Toshiba Satellite, which I use for everything (phone, tv, work, school, etc.), so I ordered this Satellite as an exciting upgrade. I use Lightscribe a lot for labeling my cdr's and dvdr's, and I thought "Labelflash" was the same thing. If this is important to you, you should know that it's not the same thing -- like VHS and Betamax, they are competing standards. Unfortunately, since Labelflash is pretty rare, the blanks are around 3x the price of Lightscribe blanks, and are only available at a handful of on line vendors. In addition, Labelflash uses the dvd laser so there are no cdr labelflash media. I found out just in the nick of time and cancelled my order. But if labeling your media with something other than a Sharpie isn't important to you, then don't worry about it.

This is a great computer for the price. I did not ever boot into Vista, but instead immediately installed Ubuntu Linux on it. The installation was somewhat difficult, but turning off the Ethernet card in the BIOS during the install fixed the problem. Once Ubuntu is installed, grab the kernel 2.6.24-19 update and install it. You can then re-enable the Ethernet card in the BIOS without problems. The computer runs extremely smoothly and 3D applications, games, and desktop effects work without a hitch. The speakers are quiet and the audio tends to have a background hiss. The microphone pickup is so noisy that it is almost unusable. External microphones do not share this problem. The integrated webcam deals nicely with varying light conditions and has good contrast without washing out colors. Only 4 stars because of crap sound chipset.
