5.0 out of 5 stars Great for what it is.
I purchased this to be used like a netbook, except bigger and with all the benefits of a laptop. For $320 (Best Buy) you can't go wrong. For a light mobile laptop that is as quick as you need it to be and offers all the features a netbook doesn't, this is a perfect alternative. This will make a perfect laptop for a teen, college student or the person on the run. This...

This isn't a Toshiba high end laptop, but for surfing the Internet, using Office and connecting it to my cable line and recording TV, this thing handles it all with no problems and does it fairly quickly. The graphics and sound quality is pretty good, and the 15" screen is perfect for watching TV. I am impressed and I am glad I came upon this opportunity instead of going with a netbook for just a bit more. This is a nice laptop and a steal for what I paid, even for the price offered on Amazon, but I recommend checking around (Best Buy on-line). You can't go wrong, Toshiba makes great products and from what I have seen in the week of using this, this is one of them.

I bought this computer three weeks ago from Best Buy for 349. I can't believe the value for the price. I love windows 7 -- it is much quicker than vista and they have added some very nice features. All the MS Office programs load quick as well as any other program I have used. It comes preloaded with Norton Internet Security. I really hate it when they load programs to get you hooked for 30 days free and then remind you every hour that it is time to buy, however, Norton is a very good fit for this computer and it doesn't seem to eat up any processing speed running in the background. I'm going to wait another week then part with some hard earned money for the annual subscription. The only negative with this computer is that the cooling fan cycles on and off which can be annoying if you are working in a quiet area. It does it job, though and keeps the computer cool. Bottom line: Unless you are a power hungry gamer, you can't go wrong with this computer.

I call Toshiba for advice and the first thing they say is this is covered under warranty. Seems they will not repair any screen related issues with there laptops. They said it was caused by abuse. I find this hard to believe since it was this way right out of the box and used for less than 3 days. No were in the warranty book does it say this is not covered. I ask for them to point this out to me and no one would answer my question. The kicker is they want $425 to repair a $400 computer. I will be returning this laptop and will avoid Toshiba like the black plague. I would suggest anyone considering a Toshiba call the warranty department first and ask them what does there warranty cover. Don't make the mistake I made.

4.0 out of 5 stars Can't Beat it for the Price, January 27, 2010
This review is from: Toshiba - Satellite L455-s5975 --Intel Celeron 900/ 2gb Ddr2/ 15.6" Trubrite/ 250gb 5400rpm/ Silver (Personal Computers)
I bought this as a Christmas present to myself because it was a great price and I got some spending money for christmas. I had a Compaq computer before which had never let me down but lacked the proper processing powers (1.2 ghz and 512 RAM just didn't cut it).

This computer was a steal for the price and so far it has been doing very well. I got it for "general use" yet this plays popular games like World of Warcraft and Guild Wars very well with low-moderate graphics settings. Youtube videos on 720p hd also play flawlessly but on 1080p hd the "cpu use" maxes out at 100% when the screen moves at a certain speed so the graphics card and 2.2ghz single core processor seem to max out there. 2gb RAM seems to be plenty so far and I haven't run into any problems.

My friend bought a $700+ new dell laptop with touch sentitive features and the works. This computer opens folders and programs faster even though the processor is 1.4 ghz slower and the RAM is 2gb slower. Unless you want High-end Video or audio editors or videos in high 1080p or higher this is a great deal for the price. Overall it looks bland and the layout is two bulky buttons and a small touchpad yet looks can be deceiving. As stated the fan comes on for about 5-20 seconds at certain intervals depending on how long it's been on. This never bothers me though since the computer stays cool from it. It can be upgraded to 4gb of RAM which I might do if I ever need the processing power. Great Screen that looks like LCD at it's best. Windows 7 is a great touch as well.

It's cheap, it's a bland silver, but you can't beat it for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great no-frills laptop, January 12, 2010

My grandparent's less-than two year old Compaq decided to give out very prematurely. It had similar issues to what Xbox 360's are having, if your curious. It's semi-fixed now, but that's beside the point :P Anyway, I found one of these at Best Buy for $320 so I figured I'd give it a shot. I was a little disappointed when I realized it lacked duel core, but honestly the new Celerons are miles ahead of the earlier models.

Now, I can't vouch for what was originally loaded seeing as I removed Windows 7 and loaded Windows Vista SP2. However, with a clean slate, it runs very well. It boots exceptionally fast and doesn't struggle with anything we throw at it. Youtube HD, hulu, flash-based sites, etc, it all works very well. Honestly there's not much else their computer is used for, but most any basic tasks should be handled quite well. Heat is manages pretty well. It's not as cool as my Core 2, but better than their old laptop (Athlon X2) and pretty resonable when using basic features.

I suppose my only real complaints would be the cosmetics and the battery life. Cosmetics is minor. It's a larger laptop than most 15.6" with more empty space around the keyboard than's really desired. There are also no soft buttons as you may see in the pictures, but those usually remain untouched on my machines. It does, however, have a nice volume roller along the front, so that's a nice plus!

As for battery life, two hours is probably stretching it. I'll use it off the plug while I'm at their house and probably can squeeze around 2 hours out of it using very basic things such as Meebo or browsing this site. Once you start watching Youtube videos, the life (as with most lappies) drops dramatically.

All in all, a good laptop for basic usage. It's more aimed for the desktop replacement segment than portability though, so don't expect to be carrying it around all that much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great computer, July 28, 2011
This review is from: Toshiba - Satellite L455-s5975 --Intel Celeron 900/ 2gb Ddr2/ 15.6" Trubrite/ 250gb 5400rpm/ Silver (Personal Computers)
I purchased my Toshiba L455-55975 two years ago. I wanted to write a review after I used the machine a while to see how it would work for me. This is the best computer for the price on the market. I work for an Early Childhood School and I am a College student. I use this computer to store children's records, lesson plans, observations and personal use. I also have taken on line classes with it. I also have used it for computer classes. During a computer training at work we had five computers to work on, a couple of Dells and HP's and my Toshiba. My Toshiba was the fastest computer. The Instructor asked if she could borrow my Toshiba for the training. I guess that speaks for itself. I highly recommend this computer.

3.0 out of 5 stars decent laptop...for about a year, April 20, 2011
This review is from: Toshiba - Satellite L455-s5975 --Intel Celeron 900/ 2gb Ddr2/ 15.6" Trubrite/ 250gb 5400rpm/ Silver (Personal Computers)
I bought this laptop (at Best Buy) in November 2009. Around November 2010 the mouse key dropped into the laptop. In March 2011 the battery quit working and it must be plugged in to use. I use it primarily for school, email, and research. For $350 this is expensive for only one good year of use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent laptop for student, January 13, 2011
This review is from: Toshiba - Satellite L455-s5975 --Intel Celeron 900/ 2gb Ddr2/ 15.6" Trubrite/ 250gb 5400rpm/ Silver (Personal Computers)
Cons:
For a month or so, I couldn't click on anything until after I pressed ctrl+alt+delete; I didn't have to re-start my computer but just had to kind of jumpstart it just by pressing that combination of buttons
Sound is terrible; I listen to music a lot and I always need headphones to get the proper sound (bad treble, bad bass, and bad overall 'loud' factor)
Doesn't come with MS Office (apart from the 60-day trial)

Pros:
Any time I've had a virus problem, a quick virus clean took care of it; computer speed is still the same from the time I got it
Fast log-on to Windows
Screen is bright

Overall, this is a decent laptop. The battery power is okay (turn off your volume and wi-fi to get better battery power) and it runs fine. Nothing extraordinarily great or bad about this computer.
