when it actually works it is a decent computer

I purchased this computer as a replacement/upgrade to a several years old Acer netbook which has been flawless. Once you get used to Windows 8 (which strangely I love on my phone and largely hate on this computer) the computer seems to perform decently when it is working (it quickly found a wireless printer and set itself up to print to it that most other computers have had issues connecting with, for instance). But a couple of days into owning it (it was still in the "getting to know you stage, I had not been actively using it) it attempted to restart after an update and would not restart--as in I left it for several days sitting plugged in supposedly restarting. Eventually after 3 days or so it finally restarted. It has been randomly problematic since then, and I have reset it a couple of times now. It is presently once again being reset to factory as for some unknown reason it suddenly lost any network capabilties, with the computer saying there is no network adapter. Nice looking machine, wish it worked. If you get lucky and get one which does, you will probably like it. I suppose I will probably end up going through the hassle of sending it back to Toshiba. This actually makes two Toshiba laptops I have owned in the past 15 years or so, I hadn't purchased another since the horrible first experience. Fool me twice shame on me I guess.
I tried to reset the computer to factory from the recovery console and it will now not start at all--the power button goes on for 2 or 3 seconds and then shuts back off. I have spent approximately three hours now trying to get through to Toshiba customer service to send it back or get the situation resolved. After waiting on hold for approximatly 20 mins or so two or three times after wading through their phone tree, I was finally able to get through to a humna(I think, it may have been an elaborate voice mail or something)the first gentleman I got sounded like he was probably from India, took my name and number "in case we get disconnected" so he could call me back, after laboriously explaining the problem I was promptly hung up on and was not called back. Later I tried again and got a fellow who sounded more eastern european from the accent, went through the whole name and phone and problem AGAIN, he stated that they had this issue (no network adapter) a lot aftet the computer does updates, then I was again disconnected, and once again he did not call me back despite having taken my number "in case we are disconnected". Toshiba's rep for horrible customer service is apparently well earned. Be aware that you should expect to need to have hours at your disposal if you want to use their customer service, and you will need every minute of those hours, and probably a few stiff drinks to deal with the mounting frustration. I will update again should I ever actually get this situation resolved, for now my recommendation is DO NOT BUY THIS COMPUTER or ANYTHING from Toshiba.
