Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Replace your desktop PC with the Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722 laptop, featuring all the power and hard drive space you expect from a top-of-the-line desktop but in an easily mobile package. It's powered by the new Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which offers a 20 percent performance boost over its predecessor while using 28 percent less power--so you get the benefit of a powerful dual-core PC plus all the benefits of mobility. The dual-execution core T7200 Core 2 Duo processor provides an optimized, multi-threaded architecture for improved gaming and multi-tasking performance, and it features a 2.0 GHz speed, lightning quick 667 MHz system bus, and massive 4 MB L2 cache.

The 200 GB hard drive offers comfortable storage space for all your work as well as a large digital multimedia library. You'll enjoy fantastic DVD playback and immersive graphics thanks to the 17-inch TruBrite display and top-of-the-line NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS graphics card with an amazing 256 MB of dedicated video RAM (GDDR3). It's also great for using as a media center, with Toshiba's unique Express Media Player enabling you to bypass the system and access CDs and DVDs with a touch of button. It comes with a DVI-D video output, enabling you to connect to a high-definition TV, and built-in Harman Kardon speakers that can produce enveloping virtual surround sound. Other features include 2 GB of installed DDR2 RAM (4 GB maximum), tri-mode 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi connectivity, Bluetooth wireless capability, multi-format memory card reader, and Windows XP Professional operating system.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: You'll be able to store large libraries of digital audio, video, and photos on the 200 GB hard drive (4200 RPM)--one of the largest hard drive capacities you'll find currently in multimedia notebooks (October 2006). This Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Processor: The Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 processor has a 2.0 GHz processor speed, super-fast 667 MHz front-side bus (FSB), and an enormous 4 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)

The Intel Core 2 Duo processor has two computational execution cores in a single processor, providing greater system response when running multi-threaded applications simultaneously with no significant increase in power consumption. It's optimized for multitasking and is ready to support the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. It can simultaneously run multiple demanding applications--such as graphics-intensive games or serious number-crunching business productivity applications--while downloading music or running virus-scanning security programs in the background. Some of the advanced Intel innovations of the Core 2 Duo processor include:

    • Smart Memory Access: Improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed.
    • Advanced Digital Media Boost: Effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications.
    • Dynamic Power Coordination: Coordinates Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology and idle power-management state (C-states) transitions independently per core to help save power.
    • Deeper Sleep with Dynamic Cache Sizing: Saves power by flushing cache data to system memory during periods of inactivity to lower CPU voltage.

  • Memory: The 2 GB of built-in memory (PC5300, DDR2 SDRAM, 2 x 1024 MB) is an excellent start for power users, and it offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add a maximum of 4 GB to handle immersive 3-D video games, video editing, graphics-intensive presentations, and multiple open business productivity applications. Also, to receive the benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The double-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data--great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 2.4x DVD+R DL, 2x DVD-R DL, 8x for both single-layer DVD+R/-R, 4x DVD+RW, 4x DVD-RW, 3x DVD-RAM, and 24x/10x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad. It also offers a launch button for the Express CD/DVD media player and control buttons (play, stop, next, previous). With Toshiba's unique Express Media Player, you can won't have to wait for Windows to boot up before you can start a DVD movie or CD. Just a simple press of the button bypasses the system and starts your media playing.
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The P105-S9722 has a 17-inch TFT display with a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. It also provides TruBrite technology, which makes images brighter and more vivid thanks to its anti-glare feature. Video is powered by the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 graphics/video card, which includes 256 MB of dedicated video RAM for uninterrupted, immersive 3-D gaming. It features NVIDIA's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications.

You'll enjoy crisp sound via the built-in Harman Kardon stereo speakers, which can produce immersive SRS TruSurround XT virtual surround sound with SRS WOW sound enhancement. This notebook also features an integrated audio card with headphone and microphone jacks.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
This notebook has an integrated tri-mode Intel 3945ABG wireless LAN, which is compatible with 802.11b/g networks (commonly found in home routers and Wi-Fi hotspots) as well as 802.11a networks (which has a higher throughput, but more limited range--great for closed office environments). And with the Bluetooth 2.0 wireless connectivity, you can synchronize and transfer files between the PC and peripherals such as cell phones and PDAs.

It includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (in addition to a standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a good offering of connectivity options:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video out
  • 1 DVI-D video port (for connecting to flat panel, high-definition monitors and televisions)
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type II, PCMCIA R2.01, PC Card16, CardBus)
  • 1 ExpressCard/54 Slot (also supports ExpressCard/34)
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
  • 1 headphone jack, 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Professional Edition (which adds Microsoft's IIS Web server, back-up and recovery utilities, Remote Desktop, and other enhanced business features) with Service Pack 2 featuring Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works, Microsoft Office OneNote 2003, McAfee Internet Security Suite and VirusScan (with 30-day trials), InterVideo WinDVD and WinDVD Creator, and Sonic Solutions RecordNow.

Dimensions and Weight
This notebook measures 15.5 x 10.8 x 1.65 inches and weighs 7.1 pounds.

Power
It's powered by a 9-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery (6000 mAh), which has a battery life of up to 3 hours (depending on usage). It has a recharge time of approximately 4 hours.

4.0 out of 5 stars Strong Competitor against Dell's XPS M1710, October 12, 2006
This review is from: Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722 17" Widescreen Notebook PC (Intel Core 2 Duo T7200, 2 GB RAM, 200 GB Hard Drive, DVD SuperMulti Drive) (Personal Computers)
This is an outstanding computer. I was very impressed with Toshiba. This is probably the first non-Qosmio Toshiba laptop that I actually enjoyed testing. There are some things that overshadow this computer, but continue to read anyways to see if these concerns pertain to you.

PROS:
Processor - FAST, Intel Core 2 Duo (new line) at 2GHz. This is the first Core 2 Duo laptop that I've had a chance to toy around with, and I was VERY impressed. It's not a REMARKABLE upgrade from the Core Duo 2.0GHz, but it is very noticible, espeically in gaming.
Graphics - Powerful nVidia 7900GS. Great for playing all the current games, and is Vista compatible for the January launch. Half-Life 2, Doom 3, F.E.A.R., and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion all played excellent. World of Warcraft also ran without a hitch, even on a wireless connection.
RAM- 2GB! Not 1GB, 2! This is all the computing power you'll need. Excellent. Not only that, there is still room to expanand, accepting up to 4GB (which is ridiculous, I don't recommend it unless you are a graphics whore)
Hard Drive - 200GB! MASSIVE. Keep in mind, this is a single hard drive, not RAID 0 linked 2 ATA drives, this is 1!
DVD Burner- Standard, but always nice
GREAT CONNECTIONS - Bluetooth, Firewire Port, USB, Express Port, Card Reader... just about everything seems to be here, including a fast 802.11 connection
Quiet - also under cons, see below
Lighweight - about a pound lighter than the Dell XPS; only 7.8lbs

CONS:
Battery Life - Like most 17" laptops, the battery life is atrocious. I got about 88 minutes in my battery drain test, 119 minutes under normal conditions, and 130 minutes under my power saving settings
Quiet - Although quiet, it's because the hard drive speed is running at 4200RPM to improve battery life and noise regulation. If you don't know, 4200RPM is slow, most laptop hard drives run between 5400-7200RPM.
Heat - Warms up pretty warm, but not like a Mac, so no exploding batteries in this.
Track pad - very small and awkwardly places for someone who's left-handed like myself
Screen - very bright, but the resolution could be better
Nothing next gen- No HD-DVD drive, no Blu Ray drive, no next gen ATi or nVidia card... everything is just top of the line for this generation
Slow recharge time- 4 hours to fully recharge a battery is pretty lame. Similar laptops are between 90-150 minutes.
Speakers - very disappointing for Harmon Kardon speakers

BOTTOM LINE: Great desktop replacement, but for on the go, keep the trips limited. Great airplane traveler, not so great for students.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722 17" Widescreen Notebook PC (Intel Core 2 Duo T7200, 2 GB RAM, 200 GB Hard Drive, DVD SuperMulti Drive) (Personal Computers)
Im currently studying architecture and rendering is very very fast, i compared it to an HP(not Core 2 Duo) with 512MB of Nvidia and this baby did 20 seconds faster render than the HP. Which in the short term isnt that much but calculate while both do 3 renders you save up a minute in this notebook.
One thing to note is it DOES NOT HAVE FIREWIRE, so if you were thinking of using forget about it. well atleast mine doesnt have it...

Bought this thru Amazon six months ago. Amazon has been great. Arrived sooner than expected. Got all the cool discounts.

Overall, nice 'puter. Easily got used to the smaller arrow and right-shift keys.

THE BAD NEWS: The DVD/CD multi-drive crapped out after only 2 months--one day it just stopped recognizing any disks. Toshiba customer support in various foreign countries ran me thru the normal checklists (which I had already done) and, after 1.5 hours on the phone, gave me a number and told me I had to ship the whole 'puter in for replacement/repair of the DVD/CD multidrive and that it would take two weeks or so.

Now I can't just ship the thing off...I'm USING it. So they promised me that since I got "the number" within 2 months of purchase, it won't expire. I'll let you know...
