DO NOT PURCHASE TOSHIBA LAPTOPS!,
By
This review is from: Satellite Pro L300-EZ1004V Notebook (Electronics)
I purchased this laptop for work and after less than six months the hard drive crashed. Ok, I know that this can happen, but it's how it's handled that matters. I called Toshiba who referred me to a local Toshiba-authorized repair center. After two weeks, I was told to call in to see the status of the repair. Instead of replacing the hard drive, the repair center had been directed by Toshiba to replace the motherboard. They did, but the hard drive still wouldn't work. After another two weeks (a full month now), they replaced the hard drive. Unfortunately, Toshiba would not allow their own authorized service center to re-install Windows because they were technically not the owners. I had to order a restore CD as it did not ship with the laptop. When I received the CD, the restore program gave me a "Wrong Machine" error message. On Toshiba's web site, I was informed that this problem was caused with an incompatibility problem between their BIOS and their restore CD and I needed to run a DMI Update Utility which could be downloaded from their web site. I did that and the DMI Update Utility regenerated a "failed to read Platform ID" error message. When I called Toshiba back, they agreed that "this shouldn't happen" and asked that I bring the laptop to a UPS store to have it shipped back to the factory for repair and Windows restore. When I went to the specific UPS store that they referred me to, the staff had no idea how to ship the Toshiba laptop back to Toshiba and couldn't figure it out even after finding the return process in their system and calling their UPS IT department. Finally the UPS store representative gave up and gave me the computer back. I called Toshiba Support back who insisted that the UPS people should know what to do. After 45 minutes, the Toshiba support representative agreed to cancel the original UPS request and create a new Order # and send me a box and label directly. I'm waiting for the return now. I would strongly encourage anyone looking for a laptop to look for another brand.
