the computer is certainly fast and has nice graphics (as promised). the problem with the computer i purchased is the touchscreen and the touchpad. After just 2 weeks of use, there is a 2-3 inch wide circle (bubble) that appears in the very middle of the screen at various times that must be a built in defect. Also the touchpad is having problems and any time i wish to click on an item it will not let me simply tap on the item. I have to press firmly and click on the lower section of the touchpad in order to make it work. Also, the screen intermittently jumps from the main screen to windows start up screen. I think I might have just gotten a lemon, but a very expensive lemon. I will be testing their customer support.

Update: The laptop completely shut down approximately 10 days ago and will not restart. This was after just 40 days of use. From what i have been told by official Toshiba tech support personnel in Philippines, it is a defective motherboard. The problem is that Toshiba will not provide warranty support in Asia since I purchased it on Amazon(go figure that). I now have to wait until I get back to the United States in 6 months and hope they will fix it then. I will have to buy another computer to get me by until then, but I promise it will not be a Toshiba.

This laptop cannot respond to a taps consistently or reliably. Double-Tapping a track-pad is a much easier gesture than physically clicking the lower right corner.

The Elan trackpad (Smart-Pad) in this Toshiba S55 cannot be used so that you can count on it to respond with your first or second or third or more attempts at double tapping.

In a Word Document, doing a tap and drag across a sentence or paragraph to highlight text takes multiple tries. Then double tapping to bring up a context menu to copy or cut highlighted text doesn't work with ease. It takes many tries at double tapping for the Elan to respond by bringing up the context menu.

Tapping to drag a window to another area of the desktop also doesn't respond. Often you need to tap the desktop then tap the window then double tap the window to engage dragging. Same goes for re-sizing a window.

Double-tapping the desktop is most difficult; double-tapping the windows 8.1 new Start Button to bring up its context menu is even more difficult.

Problems with the Elan "Smart-Pad" used in not only Toshiba's S50 line but also its S70 are complained about in Toshiba's Community Forum going back at least 8 months. Toshiba hasn't update its Elan driver since March 2014.

Using the same pressure tap will get different results. When you are able to get the trackpad to respond repeatedly, then pause for a while. It will again be unresponsive.

This is one compromise I cannot make with a laptop. This makes this laptop unusable.

You may find, as I have, that no matter how you configure the "Smart-Pad" in Mouse Settings through High or Low Sensitivity, palm sensitivity and others, this trackpad is horrible.

Arrived in a heavily damaged and partly open carton with no packing materials (frightening!).. Impossible to tell if it was bad packaging by the folks at Amazon, or carelessly handled by the shipping company, likely the latter, or perhaps the "NSA" got to it first.. "fortunately, the great folks in customer service at Amazon very quickly resolved this issue... The laptop is great! So far it has done everything I expected and much more... Wonderful value.. Very Very pleased with the laptop and even more so with the awesome customer service at Amazon.. I have always been a big fan of HP, but no longer, I LOVE THIS "Toshiba Satellite S55T-B5260" and would highly recommend this to any home and or business consumer..

The biggest problem consumers should be aware of is that customer service is non-existent. So if you have any sort of problem with your $800+ product, you're essentially on your own. Fortunately, my *only* problem so far hasn't entirely made the laptop useless. So I can still use it when it's turned on. However, the sleep function just doesn't work. If I put it to sleep, it completely shuts down. I've read online about all of the possible fixes for this bug, and tried them all, but to no avail. So I called the Toshiba tech support. To begin with, they didn't want to help me because it's been 5 months since my purchase, and they only give you support for 90 days. But since it's still under warranty, I convinced them to try and resolve the problem, which I've had since the computer arrived. Then I spent 45 minutes on the phone with the "technician". If I tried to fully describe his level of incompetence, nobody would believe me. So, I'll just say his best solution was literally to turn off the computer and turn it back on again. Like it's 1986 and he just started reading about computers yesterday. And speaking of 1986, this laptop takes longer to turn on than my first desktop. That's why the automatic shutdown it goes through, rather than entering a sleep mode, makes the laptop not really a laptop. It's immobile. Moving it from one room to another means turning it off completely and waiting an excruciatingly long time for it to turn on again. I bought a brand new laptop largely just because my old Sony takes a long time to reboot and was generally slowing down. I figured a brand new one would be faster. But it's not, and therefore sort of a waste of money.

Also, I recently learned that the battery only lasts two hours. It's just a poorly designed computer.

Thank you for the review, Jdsalin, and sorry to hear about the sleep function problem.

While there is a charge for phone support after the 90-days of free support has expired, if the support results in a diagnosis indicating that a hardware failure has occurred and warranty repair is required, you will be reimbursed for that tech support charge.

I recommend performing a Windows Reset, returning the product to factory condition. This will correct any problem caused by a software or configuration issue.

The Toshiba knowledge base article and embedded video at forums.toshiba.com/t5/System-Recovery-and-Recovery/How-To-Understanding-System-Restore-Refresh-Reset-and-Recovery/ta-p/342690 provides detailed instructions for performing a Windows Reset.

Thanks again for the feedback and for choosing Toshiba.
