I've had this PC for a couple of week already. Reading the last two reviews I can add:

- It's fast. Delivers several programa with no problem
- It's very light & thin. Make sure you take a neoprene sleeve with it and you should have no problems
- Battery lasts. I don't think it meets the 7 hours but could do 6 no problem.
- Has a backlight keyboard which really comes in handy.

- Speakers: Definitely not great speakers (but still ok)
- Gesture tracking: Being and iPod user I can tell you Windows 8 and/or Toshiba are stil far away from reaching genuine gesture interface. Try to zoom in or zoom out without going to the previus app...
- Windows 8: I think this OS is in the middle land of a tablet and a PC. You'll definitely have the feeling this is a prototype...it's a weird interface.

But considering the price and other brands performances I could definitely rate this one as a 4 star, it's a good PC and I feel confortable with it.

Bought this laptop about a week ago to replace a rapidly aging 1st generation Macbook Pro. I would have preferred to replace it with a Macbook Air, but the superior performance of excel on windows & my rather small checkbook balance forced me to seek alternatives.

i5 processor
Backlit Keyboard
Ports (HDMI & 2 USB 3.0)

Weight - feels heavier than I was expecting
Thickness - just as thick as my macbookpro which had an optical drive
Battery - last me around 4-5 hours not the 5-6 I was expecting
Ventilation - vents heat out the bottom as opposed to mac laptops which vent heat out of the hinge area between the screen and rest of the computer keeping the bottom cooler
Speakers (they are as terrible as the other reviews would lead you to believe)

Overall I'm happy with the laptop. It clearly isn't a high-end $1000+ ultrabook or macbook, but I felt it's clearly worth more than the $560 including tax I paid for it. I would have preferred something thinner and lighter with a higher resolution screen, but the screen is more than satisfactory.

The machine doesn't get nearly as hot as my old MBP, however compared to my fiance's MB air, the bottom gets hot, and the fan runs much more often.

Like others have said, Windows 8 is awkward at first, and takes some getting used to. But after a few days I was comfortable with it. It really feels like an OS in transition from traditional windows XP/7 to something else, but it hasn't quite found it yet. That being said, I find the os very responsive on this machine

Overall this machine claims to be an ultrabook, but it is very much not in the spirit of one.

I am still learning Windows 8 and all of its nuances, but for everything that Win8 has "hidden" the Toshiba seems to have the ability to handle it. It isn't a touch screen, but the touchpad can still deliver decent crossover results.

As you may or may not have seen in other reviews, the speakers are completely inadequate; they sound like garbage. I wish they made upgrades for speaker systems like they do for RAM and HDDs. It would be great to be able to purchase an aftermarket upgrade for the "speaker module" (no they don't have one but it would be a great idea for the industry to consider). That way people that connect wirelessly to bluetooth systems or simply use headphones and don't care about the built-ins could save some money and get a barebones speaker module. But if you were to be so inclined, you could purchase an upgrade to a much fuller richer sounding module for say an additional $50-100. It could even add a little bulk to allow accomodate larger and/or more complex speaker systems (such as a Bose inspired Wave-like system. Adding bulk to laptops is rediculous? Have you seen the larger capacity battery upgrades? It has happened and is possible and can be done with as little as a millimeter or two thickness increase.

Now for one thing I have observed...the touchpad texture is wearing out. You might say that all touchpads wear out. That is what happens when you constantly rub on plastic. Well I have had my Toshiba for just a little over a month now, and it remained primarily unused until my classes began this Spring. I now have a shiny spot developing and I know it won't be long before it develops into an eyesore (and therefore an item of frustration).

The good
-Performance: with 6GB of RAM and a Core i-5, this computer's performance is solid for an ultrabook. It operates very smoothly.
-Windows 8: It takes a only couple days to get used to. Once you have a grasp on it, it's a very user-friendly OS.
-Weight: good for having a 14 inch screen

The bad
-Build quality: it feels fragile and cheaply built. The screen is shaky and you can feel the plastic case bend when you lift the laptop up with one hand; I don't imagine it would survive well if dropped.
-Speakers: God-awful. Laptop speakers are not supposed to be good, but these made my old Asus sound mind-blowing.

While the speakers are a major detail, I ultimately returned it because of the perceived build quality. Perhaps if you're not going to be moving around with it much at all, this comp might work for you. But if you're on the move, I would look for something with a more solid build.

Thank you, Geebs, for your review. Toshiba highly values customer feedback about our products and we appreciate that you took the time to provide us with yours.

Regarding the impression that the Toshiba Satellite U945-S4390 is fragile, please be assured that this in not the case and the design of this model is ideal for mobile use.

Regarding sound quality, it's possible that settings of the SRS Premium Sound 3D system were not optimized and needed to be configured. If sound quality is a high priority, the following link to Toshiba's Laptop Finder will direct you to models that feature harman/kardon(R) speakers: http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptop-finder#4294965746%204294965347%204294965709

Thanks again for the feedback, and we hope you'll consider other Toshiba models. I'm confident that there are several that would meet your requirements.
