Every so often one finds a "gem of purest ray serene". I have many, many Tosti CDs but this one is absolutely the best - Il Migliore. In this 1991 recording with excellent sound, Soprano, Nuccia Focile, and baritone, Lucio Gallo, (both Italian, of course) lingeringly and lovingly caress some of his justifiably most famous songs with a gentleness, an exquisite and unforced beauty and purity of tone and with an expressively interpretative tender and deep meaning to the songs' words that I have not discovered in other singers. Both singers know how to paint musical pictures through their clarity of texture and text and their lovely voices and the fact that they eschew the optional high notes in no way detracts from the listener's joy. The piano accompaniment fittingly complements the singers with moving and subtle underscoring and flowing support. Texts are printed in the language of the songs - Italian and French only - without English translations, bios are in Italian but there is an essay in both - "On Interpreting Tosti". I rarely find Tosti songs so perfectly rendered and I give this CD the highest and most enthusiastic recommendation for those who appreciate and enjoy Tosti's songs. Canto Bellissimo. Che Gioia!!!
