Book Description

January 20, 2000
This book describes how the Romans succeeded in changing the culture of the ruling classes of the Italian Allies during the imperial age. Evidence for this is primarily found in the archaeological record, but Torelli includes in his analysis the literary tradition and epigraphical evidence. Adopting an anthropological perspective, special emphasis is placed on the religious values and cult traditions of the Romans and their unifying role.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This book fills throughout its avowed aim of bringing together archaeological and historical approaches to the issue of Romanization Journal of Roman Studies The author shows considerable skill in organizing and arranging such disparate material, constantly suggesting new perspectives on familiar evidence Journal of Roman Studies The abundance of the illustrations and of scholarly documentation is very welcome and helps to make the book a valuable gateway into this most complex of fields Journal of Roman Studies Torelli's constant effort to propose new readings, to combine disciplines, and to take the subject further is always worth the trouble. Even those who are most sceptical about his arguments and conclusions should find much to ponder, and much to admire, in this learned work Journal of Roman Studies

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but badly written, January 27, 2012
This review is from: Tota Italia: Essays in the Cultural Formation of Roman Italy (Hardcover)
It is obvious that Mario Torelli knows his stuff. This book is full of great material but it is badly written. Which is a shame, as it distracts from the insightful view points that the author attempts to make. To be fair, this is his first book written in English and as such I have to give him credit on a very good attempt. His latest book The Etruscans is much better if you are interested in this time period.Etruscans
