Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Robin Keuneke has made food her career: cooking it and teaching, writing, editing, counseling, and talking about it. Total Breast Health is about how food contributes to breast health and protects against breast cancer. Keuneke explains how "power foods" (soy, flaxseed, organic vegetables, and fresh, unprocessed oils) contribute to the prevention of breast cancer, including cooking tips and recipes. She presents a lengthy interview with Udo Erasmus, author of Fats That Heal, Fats That Kill, about helpful and harmful fats ("$150 million were spent on marketing canola oil," which, like other oils, is processed with "Drano, window washing acid, bleach, and then overheated"). She shares her views about diets considered healthy, like the French Mediterranean diet (she's for it) and the high-carbohydrate, very low-fat diet (she's against it).

The "Secrets of a Healthy Kitchen" chapter uses a question-and-answer format to cover a myriad of topics, such as timesaving tips and how to select oils, fiber, rice, dairy, and water filters. More than 125 recipes include Tofu Cote d'Azur (with two to three heads of roasted garlic), Sweet and Sour Red Lentil Soup with Saffron, Dilled Salmon in Miso-Lemon Sauce, Spicy Sardine Pita Pocket, Soybean Casserole with Chicken, and Mocha Soy Custard. --Joan Price --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

According to Keuneke, food editor of Total Health magazine, the key to healthy breasts is found in what she calls "superfoods," drawn from three culinary traditions: flax seed and oil from northern Europe, soy foods from Japan and extra virgin olive oil from the Mediterranean. Keuneke, neither a scientist nor a physician, devotes an entire chapter to an interview with nutritionist Udo Erasmus (Fats That Heal, Fats That Kill) who urges consumption of unheated oils rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. To protect against breast cancer and to aid recovery from it, she also recommends organically grown antioxidant-rich vegetables to promote a favorable hormonal balance, herbal teas to enhance the immune and lymphatic systems, special baths protective against mammography radiation, and chemical-reducing water filters for the kitchen and bath. Recipes appear throughout the text as well as in a special section featuring "breast-protective power foods," such as miso, tempeh, tofu and sea vegetables. Keuneke's approach, backed by Dr. Lendon Smith's foreword, is directed toward women who are willing to make the serious commitment to a broad life-style change.

Robin Keuneke's comprehensive and scientifically based book, TOTAL BREAST HEALTH, is well organized and full of nutritional information for today's health-conscious women. The recipes included are flavorful and, based on scientific data, may very well help to prevent breast cancer. Robin has taken a difficult scientific topic, made it easy to understand and fascinating to read. I highly recommend this book for both women and men who want to take cahrge of their health.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written, comprehensive, and fascinating., September 7, 1998
By A Customer
As a cardiologist voraciously devouring books on natural approaches to healing and health, I was elated to find Robin Keuneke's "Total Breast Health." Her work is truly complete. It approaches breast health and illness from multiple angles: science, emotion, nutrition, and spirituality are all considered. Her openness to the opinions and knowledge of other experts is a breath of fresh air. This text is well-written, comprehensive, and fascinating. It is a must for everyone. "Total Breast Health" goes to the top of my list of "natural" health books. -- Seth J. Baum, M.D., F.A.C.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book on the breast cancer preventive power of food., April 9, 1998
By A Customer
TotalHealth Magazine food editor Robin Keuneke has produced with compassionate insight a well-researched book of encyclopedic proportions for women and anyone who wants to get well and enjoy good health. A self-described foodie, Ms. Keuneke offers a guide to foods that are rich in breast protective phytochemicals, as well as up-to-date research on how phytochemicals contribute to breast cancer prevention. Most of the pages are devoted to sample menus and recipes featuring an exciting and broad spectrum of vegetables, herbs, as well as protective oils with invaluable tips on the healthiest ways of preparing them. For example, flaxseed oil and olive oil are best used unheated, according to Ms. Keuneke's research. The 125 breast health recipes include ingredients of the highest quality and are based on international flavors and cuisines. To create breast health, life style is an important factor. In chapter 20, "Personal Care Guide", Ms. Keuneke provides important information on natural medicine, exercise, personal body care tips, aromatherapy and information designed to enhance ithe immune system. TOTAL BREAST HEALTH determinedly focuses on prevention and the chapter on the healing benefits of fresh oils is a masterpiece of well-researched information, refuting current thinking on low-fat diets. Replete with interviews, case studies, medical studies, extensive bibliography, resource guide and references, this is likely 1998's most important book on prevention and self-managed health care.
