3.0 out of 5 stars Great machine, difficult to adjust!
The problems started from the beginning. It was very hard to even get this machine in the position to start working out. It is very hard to adjust the machine to different levels. The glide board is always coming off the railing and there are more then enough attachments. I find myself not doing the leg exercises because it is just so frustrating to even connect the leg...

I was skeptical of buying a piece of exercise equipment that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I doubted that any machine with a price tag of only $250 could provide an seven semi-quality exercise experience. Having used this exact model for over a year, I can confirm that the Total Gym really does produce results, as long as you remain commited to working out with it three or four times a week. There is no assembly required, the machine comes out of the box, you unfold it and you're ready to go. There is a easy-to-follow video which you can watch in order to learn the various exercises.
The machine is especially strong in working the triceps and quadriceps in the legs. The squat exercises on the lower board are superior to squats you can do with free weights. The range of motion on the machine is good.
My only small criticism is the construction of this model. It's rather flimsy, though I use it almost daily and it's held up perfectly well over 1.5 years of use. The push off bars lose their cloth covering pretty quickly, but you can still use them without a problem. You can pay $1500 for the top of the line Total Gym that Christie Brinkley and Chuck Norris use on their infomercials, but the only essential difference between the expensive model and this one is more padding and slightly more sturdy pull handles.

For the money, you can't beat this machine. If you commit to the Total Gym, you will notice results within 4 weeks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and Easy way to a magnificient body, August 6, 2004
This review is from: Total Gym 1500 (Sports)
I was 30 lbs overweight when I bought Total Gym. The machine comes fully assembled. You just have to adjust it according your requirements.
After a few minutes of setup, I immediately tried a quick and easy workout (bicep curls). Within minutes I realized that Total Gym is the real deal. It can make you thinner and stronger in just 20 minutes a day, 3 times a week. I know that there are tons of products out there making the same claim, but if you want to invest in your health, this is one of the best ones.
Here are all the pros and cons:

POSITIVES:
1) Comes Fully assembled. You have to make bare minimum adjustments according to your goals and fitness level.
2) As the ad says, replaces an entire gym. You can do virtually any excercise on Total Gym.
3) It is fun and easy. Once you start your workout, it is hard to stop
4) Comes with a video that guides you through some basic excercises and also shows you the ones used by LA firefighters.
5) Compact and very easy to store away.

NEGATIVE
1) You gotta stick with the plan. Don't give up and you will be a very happy, thinner and stronger person within 10 weeks.

Remember, you have to excercise and eat healthy to get back and then stay in shape. Total Gym will help you do it.
For those who are wondering, yes I lost all excess weight and gained new muscle. Most people I meet think I am much younger than I really am!

4.0 out of 5 stars This is great, but spend more for the next model up!, November 21, 2004
This review is from: Total Gym 1500 (Sports)
The total gym has several different models with bascially the same features. With this model, you can do everything that you can do with the more expensive model, but... in hindsight, I wish I bought the "better" model. The biggest difference is in the foot plate/hand extension. It takes only a few moments to add the piece of hardware on to do the next exercise, but depending on mood, it was sometimes enough to dissuade me. You don't NEED to do the other exercises, but I probably would do them more often if I didn't have to stop my routine to do it. If this is all you can afford, then this is a GREAT machine and you'll be very happy with it. If you can afford a wee bit more -- you'll be happier with one of the next models up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great workout for the Price, July 20, 2003

This review is from: Total Gym 1500 (Sports)
My Total Gym 1500 arrived almost completely assembled and ready to use. With about five minutes of adjusting and learning how it worked, I was ready for a workout. I've owned it now for two weeks and look forward my workouts. They are fun and relatively easy. I do have to be careful not to overdo it, however, because my muscles feel it later. I have tried other home exercise equipment, but this is the first one that actually lives up to its advertising.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Machine Saved the Day - I'm Not Going to Get Fat, August 29, 2006
By
This review is from: Total Gym 1500 (Sports)
This machine is great. I've blown thousands of dollars on gym memberships over 20 years believing home equipment was unaffordable. This relatively inexpensive piece of equipment is fun to use. The gliding motion makes you feel relaxed, it is non-stressful like no other machine I've ever used before.

The daily workouts give me freedom to eat what I couldn't otherwise eat now that I can workout at home. It has so many variations of exercises. It just gets the job done. I no longer have to fear getting fat. I was averaging a pound a year the last 3 years working out with basic aerobics equipment (Jack's Cardio Cruiser) and had to do something.

This machine also gives you the kind of workout that makes you feel good, not exhausted afterwards because it's low impact training and works the muscles well. It's a very comfortable, relaxing work out. I'm feeling the affects as I write this, and it's a wonderful warm burning sensation in my muscles.

This equipment comes assembled and learning how to use it is a snap. I have no complaints whatsoever.

4.0 out of 5 stars total gym junkie, August 25, 2005
This review is from: Total Gym 1500 (Sports)
I purchase my total gym and though it did not give me the workout that I expected, It did help me to get firmer and leaner in a short period of time. I wish it offered more of a workout for the legs but overall, I am very happy with my gym and I use it all the time. Only a 20 minute workout 3 times a week made a huge difference in the way I look.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Exercise Equipment!, July 20, 2007
This review is from: Total Gym 1500 (Sports)
I have been doing cardio for more than 2 years on a treadmill and an elliptical machine and decided to "graduate" to strength training. After doing some research on the different brands available, I settled on this one, in part due to the positive reviews here. The genius of this machine is that it uses your own body weight as resistance. Why pay $100 per Bowflex Power Rod or buy individual weights when you have your own body as weight?

So far, the machine has proved to be an excellent investment for me. I still can't believe how tough some of the exercises are, even though I thought I was relatively fit. I look forward to working out on this machine everyday. Highly recommended!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great machine, difficult to adjust!, February 14, 2005

This review is from: Total Gym 1500 (Sports)
The problems started from the beginning. It was very hard to even get this machine in the position to start working out. It is very hard to adjust the machine to different levels. The glide board is always coming off the railing and there are more then enough attachments. I find myself not doing the leg exercises because it is just so frustrating to even connect the leg attachments. The machine also does not move easily to store. However, when you get used to it, the machine itself gives a great exercise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great - but buy the 'Elite' model, May 10, 2007
This review is from: Total Gym 1500 (Sports)
I love my Total Gym- I brought it into NYC with me because the gym near my apartment is way too crowded and costs around $90/month.

I'm not looking to build a ton of muscle anymore- just stay toned - so the workout that the Total Gym gives you is excellent! You can really do a lot of exercises on it, and they really give you a good workout for a price that is nice and cheap.

The gym itself isn't too light- at least 50 lbs+, so I wouldn't get it if you can't lift that by yourself and aren't going to leave it out all the time. It would be a little awkward to keep under a bed, but I have mine stored to the side of my desk in my aparment, and it fits in nicely and I don't have to move it too far when I use it. I basically see setting it up and part of my workout, so it isn't too bad.

I bought the 'Elite' version from QVC - its $20 more but includes a pilates kit (which I havne't used), and a foot rest for the bottom to make leg workouts easier.

I also just bought the tricep dip bars and a leg kit - so basically I own the club version w/o the ability to add weights.

I'm fairly strong, but the gym still gives me a solid work out, though I won't get much bigger. The only problem is with legs - my own body weight is not enough to give me a good quad workout, but it is better than nothing and as long as you do high reps you still get quite tired!

Great buy overall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, February 11, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Total Gym 1500 (Sports)
I have always wanted a home gym, but the bulk and weight of one, combined with the size and age of my house, were not a good match. I had seen infomercials for the Total Gym and checked out their website and was SHOCKED to see the over $1,000.00 price.

This gym is fantastic. I really do not see how the higher priced models could be any better. The movement is smooth, the unit is 100% sturdy, and the user can do all exercises which can be done on machines at commercial gyms.

I LOVE my Total Gym and am thrilled with my purchase and the modest price. Money VERY well spent.
