Amazon.com Product Description

Want to tone your entire body without buying a space-hogging fitness machine? Turn to the Total Gym 3000 exercise platform, a mid-range workout device that helps you strengthen and sculpt every major muscle group in your body using a single glide board and a few handy attachments. The Total Gym 3000 works by making you lift a percentage of your body weight against gravity, creating a smooth and fluid resistance. As your strength and conditioning improve, you increase the total resistance by boosting the incline, thus increasing the body weight lifted in the exercise. The Total Gym 3000 not only works your upper body, but also your lower body, abdominals, and even your cardiovascular system. And by reducing body fat and increasing the proportion of lean muscle mass in your body, the strength training effectively turns up the thermostat so that your body burns calories constantly.

The Total Gym 3000 comes with a wing attachment for toning various back and arm muscles.
The Total Gym 3000 is equipped with an upgraded cable and pulley system, along with such accessories as a standard squat stand for working your quads and calves and a wing attachment for toning various back and arm muscles. Combined, the accessories and glide board support up to 300 pounds, letting users with a variety of body types work on strength and stability. Other features include steel handles, chrome upper rails, and support for more than 60 exercises. The Total Gym 300 comes with three exercise aids: the Start It Up! workout DVD; the 6-8 Minute Workout DVD, which includes 12 work-along workouts for men and women pressed for time; and an at-a-glance wall chart that demonstrates 35 exercises. And when you're done working out, the unit folds up for easy storage. The Total Gym 300 measures 19 by 43 by 90 inches (W x H x D) unfolded and 19 by 9 by 51 inches folded.

About Total Gym
Total Gym made its initial mark in rehabilitation centers, where its main focus was aiding people recovering from physical injuries and obstacles. The device is the perfect rehabilitation tool for several reasons: the smooth, gliding motion is easy on the joints; the various height levels accommodate every fitness level; and the padded glide board provides excellent support for the back. After years of success in the rehabilitation field, the product's inventors introduced the product to Chuck Norris 30 years ago. Norris--who calls it his "lean, mean exercise machine"--still uses the Total Gym today as his primary home fitness device. Christie Brinkley has also been a devoted user for more than 10 years, and uses it to stay lean and fit even through two children and a hectic schedule.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good entry level equipment, April 29, 2008

OK, I bought a used total gym 3000 for 100.00 a year ago. I have used it on a regular basis ever since. The unit has gotten a little noiser, and is not nearly as easy to put away as they would have you believe. However, it *does* work you out well. It is easy to use, and effective. Maybe the body rail is better (it would be nice to have something wall mounted!) BUT - this is a review of the total gym 3000. I have lost weight, gained muscle and never hurt myself. Does everything it says it will do. Certainly not a ripoff IF you use it.

This review is from: Total Gym 3000 Home Gym (Sports)
I've had one of these for many years now, and use it regularly. Anything that promises to be all things to all people is probably overstating its case. But the Total Gym comes pretty close. There are a lot of exercise machines hyped on late night TV. Most of them are pretty worthless, but the Total Gym works, if you use it. There are still a few things you can do better without it, such as chin ups with a chin up bar, but for most things, you can do the exercise better on the Total Gym. Some of the exercises with the foot attachment are impossible at the highest level because the pulley would need to attach a few feet higher, and the ones where you sit sideways are awkward but certainly doable. Suffice to say that it's an overstatement to say that it's the ideal machine for those. But there are an extremely large number of exercises for which the design is perfect.

The problem with most exercise routines is that people overdo it. They hear that "only 20 minutes" will get them in shape, but sooner or later, a day comes when they don't have time. The next thing you know, it's sitting in a closet and the return period has long since expired. People don't blame the product, but blame themselves. The Total Gym is versatile. One of the features mine included was John Carleo's six to eight minute a day workout. It's a lot easier to stick with that sort of routine and do so for years. If you miss a day, you can get right back into it. If you miss a few, back off resistance or repetitions and keep going. It's based on gradually increasing repetitions by one each week, and then raising the level and cutting the repetitions back to 8 when it gets to 14 reps. That way, the amount of time spent does not go up dramatically, and starting off at a low level is not a problem. If you stick with it long enough, you will need to buy a weight bar and some free weights, which go through holes in the bottom to give more resistance. Unfortunately, the weight bar has to be theirs.

The problem I have with it is quality. The parts most subject to wear and tear are the wheels. I also had a few other minor problems. When I called the company, they refused to help me. They even went so far as to say they would not send me the parts listed in my manual even if I paid them. Why? Because I did not buy it using their website. They insisted that units sold on any other website but their own are unauthorized. Mine was purchased brand new and had their warranty statement and contact information in the factory sealed box.

Over time, I ended up buying after market wheels on an auction website. The rest is holding up. I ended up getting different handles that find more comfortable which are ironically more cheaply made. There's nothing wrong with the stock ones, though. The pins that lock some of the attachments on got bent from regular use, but those can be purchased at a home supply store.

I bought my Total Gym new at a good price that was far lower than the price they hype on TV. I don't think it's worth what they claim, and they license the name from another company that makes professional models for physical therapy. Incidentally, it was the effectiveness of other Total Gym models in a professional environment that got me interested in the first place. This might be cheaper, but it works on the same principal. Then again, you may be able to find one of the professional models cheaper.
