3.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but way too many mistakes
This is a great book to flip through, but the errors are unbelievable. Does anyone think it is really possible that Jari Kurri shot 61.4% in 1986-87. 54 goals on 88 shots? Someone should have checked this over before it got printed. I've found at least 10 more errors/typos in here as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars PUTS OTHER SPORTS REFERENCE BOOKS TO SHAME, January 8, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League (Hardcover)
Since 1983, the copyright of The Hockey Encyclopedia by Stan and Shirley Ficshler, I have eagerly awaited an updated version of this incredible reference book. Finally-the masterpiece of them all. Comprehensive section on the History of the game and the NHL and tons of stats. The greatest thing that sets this book apart from others is the trades and tracking of each player. Who went to what team for what player or what player was selected for a traded draft choice. The ultimate trivia at the tip of your fingers!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A work complete in itself..., May 9, 1999
This review is from: Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League (Hardcover)
This book was extremely well written, and being a hockey fan myself, I am always interested in finding new fact, figures, and the like. I was pleased at the way it informed me on everything that has happened in hockey. Everything trival anyone would want to know is in here! Statistics, players, history, you name it, it's in here. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an appreciation of the hockey players in all countries who entertain us everyday and to anyone that's a fan of the coolest game on earth!

5.0 out of 5 stars Holy Mackinaw, talk about extensive, January 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League (Hardcover)
This was quite a comprehensive account of pretty much everything you ever wanted to know about hockey. While hockey is a monsterous institution in Canada and parts of eastern Europe, it wants to make a bigger mark down here in the US. Its really only huge in traditional cities such as Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Detroit, St. Louis, and perhaps Buffalo. Anyone who is trying to get someone into the game, this is a great gift to give as well. This is entertaining, informative, and an excellent selection for anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference with some misguided priorities,, December 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League (Hardcover)
As previous reviewers have noted, this is an excellent reference that is bound to become a standard at almost the level of its "Total" brethren in baseball and football. However, I believe that the editors applied misguided priorities to the content of the book to some extent. Allegedly the official encyclopedia of the NHL, it includes over 100 pages on international hockey (in case you needed to know the 1967-8 league champion in Iceland), but devotes only a single page to Stanley Cup results, with W-L in Finals games and the winning and losing teams and coaches. I would have expected a book of this scope to list the scores of ALL Stanley Cup games, if not line scores and scoring summaries. The Stanley Cup playoffs are the showcase of the NHL, and it struck me as odd that the annual game results, at some level, did not find their way into this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Great for Hockey nuts!, December 1, 1998

If you're a hockey nut, this book is for you. It lists all the players who ever played an NHL game and also explains the origins of the game itself. The stats alone are worth the price. Now you can see who all Newsy Lalonde (the Wayne Gretzky of the early 1900's) played for, and his stats, as well as Gretzky's stats.

The parts on the origins of the game are extremely interesting and shows how the best sport on earth has become global. There are also good biographies of important hockey people, male and female, as well as NHL team histories, league stats, and minor pro and European league stats.

All in all, an excellent comprehensive hockey encyclopedia.

Damn this book is Flawless it has Olympic stats it has some stats on the old players. The Only thing missing was 1892-1917 stats for players who did not play in the NHA or The NHL. I love the sections on the stats it has the players complete minor league and college stats as well as his Pro stats. It has the place he was drafted and all the transactions. This book has a wrap up of the Draft from 1965-1998 and does a fantastic job at it. The Stats and the Draft coverage is the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Information you never thought of knowing, April 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League (Hardcover)
Very informative, never thought I'd learn such silly information such as the fact that the goalie for the Seals outskated his own defensemen while stickhandling. Just stuff like that make it a must for every hockey fan. Hockey is the greatest game in the world and the Flames are the best team. The biased comes from years of loyalty. Pretty much everything you ever thought about knowing about hockey is in there. Remember... Go Flames Go!!! Robert Erickson College Heights AB Canada
