Editorial Reviews

Lexicon devil present part two (of three) of their reissue series documenting the great works of new york's the scene is now from the 1980s - a band that was spawned from nyc's heady no-wave scene. 'total jive' was tsin's 1986 sophomore album and is equal parts velvets/feelies strum and angular geekoid rock a la television/talking heads. This version is fully remastered from the original master tapes and features a 12-page full-colour booklet with never-seen-before photos of the band and liners.

"Try to remember when life was so tender/When dreams were kept beside your pillow" if you wish, but don't forget that the whole thing happened in New York, during the early eighties, beside the No wave scene when liveliness was so tenderly furious. No wave ?! Everybody, as soon as the word is eructed, use to talk about the Contortions, Teenage Jesus, DNA and Mars, the No New York riot squad. Perfect. Good answer. But as the history has been recently rewritten (don't forget to view the pages dedicated to those books on amazon.com), there was a whole goddam iceberg below this famous sampler. The Scene Is Now was part of it ("i wanna be part of it, New York, New York") as a four guys band : Dick Champ, Phil Dray, Jeff McGovern & Chris Nelson. They were a little bit different than the bands listed above, more rooted in songs even these songs were oddly fashioned. Space and oddity was the musical key used by the band to write and play their songs because oddity does not use to mean to be silly or stupid but a way to make things sound different. And The Scene Is Now was absolutely perfect for it. And while you are listening to the record you can sing along too. Good songs, really good songs suited in genuine perfect odd arrangements ; you can hear this whole thing in this remastered edition of this record initially published in 1986 on the great Twin Tones/Lost Records label. The Scene Is Now was pretty good, this record is pure TSIN style. Take it, listen to it and purchase (same adress as above)the other three cds from the same band that you can find nowadays. And don't forget also to cast an ear to Mofungo, another no wavy band from the same era in which Chris Nelson used to play (and Elliott Sharp too), because you will have to "try to remember (...) when life was so slow and oh so mellow"... as M. Belafonte used to say and for ever.

I have fond memories of owning this album on vinyl back in the late 1980s. Seeing that it was finally available on CD caused me to order it recently. Listening to it again all these years later ... well, I wish I could say that I still love it, but for whatever reasons I don't feel as enthusisastic about it this time around. Overall, it's an odd but engaging collection of songs. Quirky pop with bits of jazz and other stuff floating in the mix. The sticker on the outside of the says says that this album is "recommended to fans of The Feelies, Pell Mell, Minutemen, and Yo La Tengo." Well ... I'm not so sure about that. Perhaps fans of those other bands WILL like The Scene is Now (Yo La Tengo covered one of their songs on "Fakebook", but that song is not on this CD), but they certainly don't sound like any of those artists. If forced to compare them to anyone, I'd say they are like a more avant-garde NRBQ crossed with Captain Beefheart.

For fans of The Scene is Now another nice bonus with this CD reissue is the thick booklet that's included, giving you a history of this interesting band and photos. Overall I still think this a pretty good album, certainly one that was very different from the other "alternative" music at the time it was recorded. I'd give it 3.5 stars if that was an option.
