4.0 out of 5 stars Good primer

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the time, May 29, 2008

I received a copy of this product, and I now understand why one of their own employees wrote a positive five star review for the product. They would be the ONLY ones.

The produce description states, "Lessons at Inspirtech are delivered in a unique hybrid approach to highlight the advantages of both download and streaming lesson formats" For people that do not have access to a high speed fiber connection, forget the streaming lesson format!

Their description also states, "For users who wish to access training on the go a DVD-Rom Edition is also available." I've had nothing but trouble running the DVD edition on my laptop with Visa or my desktop with Windows Professional XP SP2.1. What does it run on?

I'm looking for something that is quick, easy and informative to learn all aspects of SolidWorks and its many tools in a DVD form. I'm still looking...

1.0 out of 5 stars I saw it. I was disappointd, July 22, 2008

I saw it and I was very disappointed. Not worth the time or money. Spend your money with SolidsProfessor if you want a DVD for Solidworks.

Buyer beware! look at the reviews. Each time there is a poor review a good review is written with in a day or two. Two reviews were written by the company. Does this tell you anything about the product?

I went through the videos quickly and after a couple days was able to create 3D objects that were useful to me. Obvious with a product that's all of one DVD, it has limited scope, but I found it rather enjoyable to watch. The narrator goes through all the exercises slow enough where you won't feel overwhelmed, though at times I felt he was going too slowly since he kept opening up files in front of us and that was unnecessary -- it only took an extra 10 seconds or so each time (like 18 total toal times), but it made it feel slower. On the plus side, all the repeating and such drilled home the major points. He also goes through tips while going through the instructions and those were good.

For some reason though, you can't resize your video larger, but if you just copy the flash files from the DVD itself (by going into the contents of the DVD), you can play the files in your browser and it's big. Towards the end, he really just glosses over the harder stuff, but this video is just a primer so you really can't expect to be a total solidworks wizard afterwards. You probably can expect to be competent with practice though.

If you're making a choice between a book and a video, know that both are helpful in different ways. With books, they're probably more comprehensive. Videos are like having someone there with you, so it was faster for me to learn by watching the videos. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth 10,000 words.

All in all I liked it and thought it was worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Course for learning SolidWorks, July 25, 2008

When I first saw this training product, I didn't know what to think. I wasn't use to learning programs via video, but I went for it.

The Inspirtech training was amazingly easy to use and even though I've been using SolidWorks for over 10 years, I was able to see how Al (the producer of this course) used certain commands and it taught me ways of using SolidWorks I had not thought of before.

Here's what I thought was cool:
-It came in one program that installed all the video and example files.
-Everything is accessible through SolidWorks
-The exercises are laid out logically
-you have model example you can learn from
-There's A LOT of content for the money

The courses were slow-paced for me, but it gave me time to follow along as he talked through the steps to complete the exercises. Well done and well recorded too.

I'd recommend this to 3D CAD students, teachers, and even SolidWorks resellers and the advanced user. This is how a course should be taught.

Sidenote: It was also really easy to contact the company about the product and speak with Al directly about other courses they plan for the future. You just don't see that in online companies very much. Thanks.
