3.0 out of 5 stars Gold Edition missing content April 19, 2013
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Shogun 2 is a great entry in the Total War franchise. Detailed reviews of the core game and Fall of the Samurai stand-alone expansion can be found on their respective Amazon pages and elsewhere. For those who are new to the game and wonder what this Gold Edition is missing, here is a list.

DLC for Shogun 2: Hattori Clan Pack, Ikko Ikki Clan Pack, Otomo Clan Pack, Sengoku Jidai Unit Pack, and Saints and Heroes Unit Pack
DLC for Fall of the Samurai: Obama Faction Pack, Saga Faction Pack, Sendai Faction Pack, Tsu Faction Pack
Common DLC: Blood Pack

The Rise of the Samurai Campaign DLC for Shogun 2 is included. The Dragon War Battle Pack is a part of Fall of the Samurai, thus also included.

Except for the Blood Pack, the missing DLC are exclusively faction and unit packs. The factions are not "missing" from the campaign, simply not playable unless you buy the DLC. They do have unique characteristics that you may want to try out as you get into the game. The DLC units are fun, but almost all are either clan-specific or high level, so they are only a small part of gameplay for some and not a factor at all for others.

If you are looking for a good deal to start playing Shogun 2, the Gold Edition is a bargain even at 40 USD. You get all the essentials the game has to offer. If you want to check out additional units or factions later, you can always get them separately from Amazon or Steam. If you are a collector looking for everything (minus Blood Pack), Amazon UK has the European Gold Edition for 27.99 GBP at the time of this writing. I don't know how regional versions work on Steam though, so the reader is advised to make sure it will work with their account.

3 stars: 5 stars for new players, 1 star for collectors looking for the definitive collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still the best Total War October 17, 2013

So, you want a new Total War game? Sure, you could spend $60 on Rome 2, but it's full of bugs, performance issues (even after 4 patches) and missing a lot of features that made previous TW games fun. For half that price, you can get one the best entries in the series, plus its two expansion packs. For $30, Shogun 2 Gold is a great value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reboot! April 2, 2013
Verified Purchase
This has a lot of the best of what the Total War series has developed. It's the most involved and enjoyable of the series and the most difficult. Now a big army isn't enough. Economy is even more sensitive than it was in previous editions and once again the battle engine is much improved. Can't wait to see how the Rome reboot looks!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best game of all time. August 12, 2013
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This is my favorite game of all time. I played video games since i was 8 and i've tried many; but Shogun 2 is something different. I am not big on reviews, but seeing a 3 star rating on such an epic game doesn't sit well with me. I've put 608 hours into this game and replayed it countless times. Graphics are amazing ( make sure to get Darthmod, a great free addition to an already epic game). All soldiers look differently not like a bunch of clones. When the battle is in progress it feels like you a really on the battle field: heads get chopped off, arms and legs get severed, blood everywhere and the best part is that all soldiers have a wide variety of fighting moves, so it doesn't seem like an entire 5 thousand people strong army doing the same thing over and over again. This game is very historically accurate and fun. Shogun 2 welcomes you to the world of mysterious, ancient Japan and it defiantly sparked my interest in Japanese culture. Well that's that folks, i highly recommend this game to anyone.

I honestly believed like all other Total War titles that the GOLD version would contain DLC. I was wrong. Mistake

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantatic game October 23, 2013

The only reason it's not five stars to me is because of how great medieval 2 was, but overall a great addition to the Total War series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A One of a Kind January 27, 2014

At first I did not like it. I did not understand how to do things. As I failed alot, and learned... it became very clear that this took some planning.

The diplomacy is a major part of this game. Quite updated from Medieval TW 2, upon which I tend to judge all other products of this genre.

It can be VERY demanding. I find that slow turns, which are well thought out.. are rewarded. In this title this is especially true.

There have been times I have faced a militarily superior opponent, that I held on lockdown with my agents, while I dominated the entire area. Caused his citizenry to rebel; and turned those citizens into my own private army to fight them!!

No other title has this sort of intrigue.
