Best Board On The Market,
By NuJoi "Create with me" (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Totally Bamboo 3-Bowl Butcher Block Prep Board (Kitchen)
I am a destroyer of cutting boards. Traditional wood cutting boards, like unseasoned cast iron, are things I just don't get. They require too much upkeep.
Bamboo is different! It is harder than the end cut maple boards, yet it is more forgiving in te upkeep department. Bamboo still needs to be washed and oiled. A periodic scrubbing with Kosher salt and a cut lemon is a good thing too. The beauty is that bamboo boards do not warp as easily. This has been my saving grace! Now for this board specifically: I have no regrets! It is nice and thick, which means it's more comfortable to use on days when you have a lot of items to work through; you'll experience less fatigue from chopping on a thicker board. It's large size is very accomodating. The prep bowls are very handy. Push the food into the bowls to clear more space on the board. The containers lift out easily for transport to the stove or wherever. The containers are dishwasher safe. For cleaning the surface, as stated earlier, it takes soap and water well. I wash the board on marathon cooking days or when I'm dealing with garlic and onion. For herbs and other veggies, I wipe the board with a dish-soapy towel. Once a month, sprinkle Kosher salt on the board and scrub it with the cut side of a lemon. Rinse and let dry. Oil the board mineral oil. I've had my board for almost two years and it is still beautiful. This board is worth the price.

Pros:
-Gorgeous. The bowls, and novelty of the design, make it even more attractive. Could be used at a party with bread/crackers/vegetables on the board and dips in the bowls -Amazing cutting surface -Bowls are attractive and easy to clean. The thumb hole makes them easy to lift out. You can also buy replacements. -Raised surface means the bottom doesn't get dirty or wet. You can also slide a plate/plastic cutting sheet under the board, allowing you to easily transfer cut-up items -Eco friendly -Sturdy but not too heavy to pick up. It can therefore function more easily as a tray for dry foods. Cons: (mostly relate to this style of board, not the worksmanship on this particular one) -Bowls fit very well into board, but if you move it when putting vegetables in and a gap opens, they can fall through. -The board might be more prone to cracks/warping because you can only cut on one side -More difficult to store on its side than a flat board (though you really should want to display it) -Bowls aren't big enough to hold large amounts of vegetables, and are a bit too big for something like garlic -Cannot refinish the board in 10 years like you can with flat boards (though I wouldn't be able to do this anyway) I have nice knives and wanted a cutting board to match. I bought this hoping it would be an item I would never have to or want to replace. It's only been two months, so I suppose this board is still in its infancy, but I have not been disappointed. Cutting on it is a pleasure. Like any board, it will scratch if you use sharp knives, but scratches are not noticeable due to the bamboo design (especially if you keep it oiled). So far, it has not cracked or split, and I have noticed no flaws in the board or bowls. I have been caring for it properly. If you're not willing to do the following, you might want a cheaper board: Oil regularly (once every week or two). After use, promptly wash with a soapy sponge, then wipe with a hot rag, then dry with a towel. Oiled properly, drying is a cinch.

****Original Review was 4 stars and listed below, but see edit**** This is a great work surface and the prep bowels are a novel idea. That being said, the execution could have been better. Pros- Looks- this is a relatively attractive board that you won't mind leaving out all the time if you have the space Size- great thickness for cushioning cuts and overall dimensions will accommodate a large volume of ingredients Convenience- prep bowels make moving diced items off the board very easy, just push them in and pull out the bowel Cons- Finishes- cutouts for prep bowels are slightly uneven and a bit rough- this could lead to premature wear Quality control- prep bowels are very thin and two arrived dented Overall, I'm pleased with the board and expect to get at least a few years out of it. ****Edit 2/11/11**** Do not buy this board. Even with regular oiling w/ Totally Bamboo's own oil and virtually no real contact with water, this board has developed splits in two areas. Totally unacceptable for this price. Downgraded to 1 star.
