This 150-page book covers over 24 public domain, shareware, and commercial programs that make macintosh computers cool, hip, personalized, and fun to use, yet have absolutely no productivity value whatsoever. The book contains a single 800K disk that decompresses to almost one and one-half megabytes of files. Individual chapters describe what each program does and how to use it for the greatest enjoyment. Programs were chosen for their longevity (i.e., no "joke" programs that would be used on once and then relegated to the Trash). To hedge against future competition, the author has acquired exclusive 1-year licensing agreements from several programmers. For added value, some commercial programs are included in limited or handicapped versions. This book appeals with anyone with a Macintosh running System 6 or greater. Beginners and experts alike will be able to easily install and use the programs contained on disk.

Linzmayer has the enviable job of finding Macintosh shareware and freeware, testing it out, and then cranking out books with ridiculous titles that explain the utility or nonutility of these programs. Are these books worth it? That all depends. If you have access to the Internet and a decent Macintosh site, you can FTP (file transfer protocol) most of this stuff yourself. If you belong to a respectable Macintosh users group, most of this software is available free. But if you're completely isolated from Macintosh society, then these books were made for you. I'm disappointed that SYBEX didn't combine these into one larger volume, but even a more massive collection wouldn't be worth the asking price, given any other route to these Mac applications. Spend your money instead on membership in a local users group, or sign up for Internet access.
