Book Description

Girls will love this book! Just as much fun as a pajama party is its afternoon counterpart—a tea party! It's a way to get together, trade gossip, share a fun activity, and enjoy tasty little snacks. This brightly illustrated tea-party menu book serves up ideas for 16 different tea parties. Just a few of them are—English Tea Party: English breakfast tea with scones and jam, and instructions for a Paint-Your-Umbrella activity. . . Chinese Tea Party: China black tea with fortune cookies and instructions for writing fortunes . . . Tea Ball: A tea punch bowl, chocolate-dipped fruit (fresh and dried) and time for learning the fox-trot and other ballroom dances. Still other party ideas include a Boston Tea Party, a "Tee" Party to go with miniature golf, and even a Pajama Tea Party, complete with scary stories at bedtime. Color photos show tea party decor, and cleverly stylized art decorates each of the spreads showing activities and menus.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

For a take on tradition, readers may want to consult The Totally Tea-rific Tea Party Book: Teas to Taste, Treats to Bake, and Crafts to Make from Around the World and Beyond by Tanya Napier, illus. by Annie Galvin, photos by Julie Brown. Children can enjoy chai at "The Indian Tea Party," get a food facial at the "Beau-Tea Party" and, at "The Russian Tea Party," dance the Kazatsky. Ages 7-11.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-6-Napier brews up a potful of variations on the tea party, from the English to the Southern belle, the T-shirt (with marbleized muffins), the Japanese, and even one with a golf motif. Each section includes some background on the theme, tips on wardrobe and table settings, a recipe and an activity or craft, and a menu. Many of the ideas are easily adapted to non-tea parties, and the recipes, while not really difficult, would benefit from adult supervision. The colorful pages are filled with decorative borders, spot illustrations, and photographs of smiling female party planners and partyers. The traditional tea party is presented in more depth in Lindsey Tate's Teatime with Emma Buttersnap (Holt, 1998). This very taste-tea concoction of ideas will be popular with girls, moms, scout leaders, teachers, and anyone with an inner "little girl."-Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS
