Stephanie O'Dea is a New York Times best selling author, award-winning blogger, and a mom of three.
O'Dea likes shortcuts. A LOT. Her websites and books have reached more than 12 million people from all over the world.
She shared her number one cooking shortcut in 2008 when she made a New Year's Resolution to use her Crock-Pot slow cooker everyday for a year and write about it on the Internet.
Her award-winning blog resulted in two cookbooks: Make it Fast, Cook it Slow and More Make it Fast, Cook it Slow. Due to a family allergy, all of the recipes happen to be completely gluten free.
O'Dea compiled her housekeeping, parenting, and meal planning shortcuts in Totally Together: Shortcuts to an Organized Life.
In this book/organizational guide, O'Dea tackles how to organize a busy household so anyone can have a "tidy and tranquil home in just minutes a day". The format for this book will be a weekly planner (with checklists!) that can begin anytime during the calendar year. ` Stephanie has appeared on Good Morning America, The Rachael Ray Show, featured in Real Simple Magazine, Woman's World, and Oprah.com. I need help organizing my cleaning and my life. Fly Lady overwhelms me and leaves me feeling like a failure before I complete one day! No so Stephanie and Totally Together. I've found a schedule I can live with plus a system to keep my house clean and myself sane. I love that Stephanie understands that life happens and you're not always going to get to everything everyday. Her system is flawless in that it allows for that, it's easy to pick up, keep going and keep making good choices to make life easier. I really recommend the Totally Together system.
I have found Stephanie's crockpot cookbooks especially helpful and to be signficant time savers, so I had high expectations for her latest work. Thankfully, she delivered! The book takes the overwhelming tasks of keeping a household organized & breaks down the tasks by week. I feel like I can now manage the household tasks now that someone else has told me which ones to do & when. I highly recommend this book and know that as the weeks pass, my book is going to become tattered from all of the use!
I just have to say I received my copy the 3rd of August and have been striving to apply the daily 7 and what a huge help just that has been so you can imagine how great the rest of this is! Thanks Stephanie and keep going with this.
This organizer is really geared more to a mom who has kids (and probably a bit of time at home). It didn't feel relevant to me. Also, the cover didnt seem durable enough to stand a busy persons life. I love the cookbooks -and Stephanie. Will probably gift it to someone else who could benefit.
I love Stephanie O'Dea's crockpot blog and was intrigued when I heard about this book. When I first received it, I read it in one day and was surprised at how short the actual book was. After the chapters outlining her techniques and ideas, the rest of the book is a weekly checklist/calendar reminding you to accomplish certain tasks each week. Some of the items change each week (i.e. one week you launder linens, and the next you clean your car, the next you work on holiday shopping, etc). So at first, I wasn't sure how helpful this book would be....But after a couple of weeks, I am SO glad that I purchased this book! It has surprised me by holding me accountable (due to the checklist each day) to accomplish the Daily 7. I am gradually easing into the purging (aka PROM) of my home and clutter. So while the actual chapters of this book are short, the techniques and ideas are great and useful, and the checklist/calendar in the back of the book is very helpful on a day-to-day and week-to-week basis for setting and accomplishing goals. I would definitely recommend this book! The main reason I chose 4 stars instead of 5 stars, is that I DO wish it had more content.
This thin 6"x7" spiral-book stows well inside laptop tote, car glovebox, briefcase, backpack small zip, diaperbag, and handbag. O'Dea gives a few pages intro conversation and meat, then a crisp week-page 1-yr cal layout with eye-friendly text add-in. I know a few working moms who love it. I'm a stay-home 50-ish 1st time mom. One blogger felt list-burdened; I enjoy Stephanie's easy, quick pace - a perfect jumpstart after delivering or dropping fam between jobs, schools, events - to get on with my own day's fill. She ended my forever scattered sticky-notes with her easy cal-planner, weekly repeat checklists, and abundant quickforms. At the bookstore, looking over the deep-delving psych-luggage healing organizer books was ... paralyzing. I wanted a streamlined do-it-now voice. Stephanie is a no-fuss instant techie-pal, asbent fem/aw-shucks FlyLady-ish concepts and buzzwords. From chapter 1, sensible and immediately realized successes began. Also, other books' inflexible schedules left me futile, giving up, or sideswiped with to-do's. But her snapshot sense gave my homefront mgmt focus a totally doable feel. Yes! This is not a time mgmt meeting with more stuff to read and do afterward at home in an already scattered nonstructure. My once 1-man-band homefront scenario (seems like overnight now) seamlessly became an family-enjoyed shared free-time result - totally together. Her website's a great resource and read too. As you read her book tho', remember she had young ones while authoring her book. So we with grown kids might debate (for example) her using her bathing childrens' discarded tubside garments as counter-sink-fixture wipes versus more usual proper undersink basketed tools or supplies. I'm not that...scavenging.... Taken with a bit of 'new mom' salt, Totally Together serves 95% as a first-rate first-read and reads well too as leftovers.Read more ›
I really like how this datebook/planner is structured. You can start anywhere in the calendar year and fill in the dates as you go. I love the weekly and daily checkbox features. I can leave it open and let the kids check off the chores they've done. I like the look and size of it too. My life has been too chaotic recently and the ability to check off basic things that I should be doing every day makes me feel as though I am accomplishing things.
I follow Stephanie's blog for slow cooking & when I saw she had written this book I pre-ordered it from Amazon. I am 17 weeks pregnant and still sick as a dog! My house, laundry, dishes, and life seem to be more than I can handle right now. With child number three on the way, I really felt like I needed someone to tell me when to do "forgettable" tasks like clean the microwave or organize my closet. Stephanie's approach to 7 daily tasks and one bigger task per week is exactly what I needed! Now I feel like I have a cleaner house and am more on top of things, even though I still don't feel that great. I would recommend this book to anyone who has difficulty keeping things in order, and since that is most of us, Stephanie has really put together a non-judgmental, encouraging, easy approach to cleaning and maintaining your life.
