Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The Enron disaster is the largest business disaster in the history of American business. Historically, disasters have proven fertile ground for satire and parody humor - it seems to be a way that people first cope and then move beyond the tragedy.

Enron's meteoric rise from an obscure Houston based pipeline company to the seventh largest company in the United States pretty much guaranteed that anything it did would be noticed. Unfortunately, becoming the largest bankruptcy in the history of U.S. business was probably not the kind of attention that Enron management had in mind.

"The Totally Unauthorized Enron Joke Book" is a collection of humor about Enron. The company. The shareholders. Politicians. The auditors. Consultants. Ex-CEO Ken Lay and his executive team. Jokes, mock news stories, top 10 lists, poems, songs and more. Most of these have never been published before. Many of the items are laced with appearances by famous people from current events to further liven up the material.

Each chapter takes humorous aim at a different aspect of the Enron debacle.

We hope everyone (maybe even some former Enron employees and shareholders) will enjoy this eclectic collection of humorous material and view it not as mean spirited but rather in the true tradition of Jonathon Swift, Sinclair Lewis, "Mad Magazine", "National Lampoon" and other purveyors of parody and satire, namely using humor to prod at the hubris, foibles and fumbles of events and those involved in them.

We didn't kill Enron - don't blame us!! It was dead when we got there. Some readers may not think a business disaster of this magnitude is the least bit humorous and on one level we're probably in violent agreement. Lots of people lost jobs, money, and more in what's probably going to turn out to be a pretty sordid scandal. Ugly stuff.

On the other hand, there is no point in crying over spilled stock and sometimes humor can make a point far better than a room full of lawyers or politicians. And laughter, if not the best, is certainly a good medicine. This book may not be able to make readers forget the unpleasant reality that Enron represents but we think it may be able to convince them to at least smile at it a little.

From the Author

I've been in and around the technology industry for over 25 years and I've never seen a disaster that remotely resembled the collapse of Enron. I know this debacle has been very painful for a lot of people but sometimes a dose of laughter can lighten things up a little and help them move on. Poking fun at the downfall of the rich and powerful is at the core of the American literary tradition of satire and parody so it just seemed to me like a good idea to have a collection of humorous material with Enron, Ken Lay and some of its executives, consultants and practices in the bulls eye.

5.0 out of 5 stars Side-splitting humor, June 4, 2002
This review is from: The Totally Unauthorized Enron Joke Book (Paperback)
"Why do they bury Enron senior executives at least 20 feed under ground? Deep down they are really good people." This is just one of the many hilarious jokes, shaggy dog stories, riddles, and side-splitting humor comprising Tim Barry's The Totally Unauthorized Enron Joke Book, and dedicated to making light of one of the worst financial scandals in modern American history. Undeniably funny, sometimes quite nasty, and always tipping its tongue in cheek to the disastrous behavior of Enron and its harsh consequences upon many ordinary people, The Totally Unauthorized Enron Joke Book is highly recommended for anyone who needs a good, solid laugh in these troubled times.
