Totally Wired bills itself as a documentary about Schneiders Buero, a store located in Berlin dedicated to analog synthesis. The DVD's description states, "...as the twin forces of capitalism and digital technology seep through the last bricks of the Wall, how much longer can this analogue asylum survive?", which is a great hook for a documentary but it's really not what this movie is about. This movie is really a series of mini interviews with different customers and independent synth manufacturers whose lives intersect at Mr. Schneider's store. The whole sub-plot about the store's survival is nearly non-existent.

Having said this, the people featured are all wonderfully interesting. Some are hobbyists, some are avant garde musicians, some are professional manufacturers, all of whom share a love of analog synthesis. This movie isn't about the bigger names in the synth business but about those people who have such a passion for analog synthesis and for the tactile feedback that analog equipment provides that nothing else is worth owning. The most interesting parts for me were the independent synth manufacturers, many of whom are just small companies that create unique synth modules, yet still manage to thrive in this niche market.

One technical problem is that the image does not seem properly formatted for the screen. Half the names that appeared on screen were cut off and I had to watch the DVD zoomed out to be able to see as much of the image as possible. Even zoomed out, quite a lot of the text was still cropped.

Despite the technical problems, the documentary was extremely interesting and a must own for anyone interested in analog synthesis.
