Book Description

May 1, 2001
Fehl Cannon lives and works in Washington, DC. Georgia born, he has always had an intense fascination with the nude male body. In fact he has been photographing the male nude since the tender age of 16. He studied fine art photography at the University of the South in Sewanee and over the last twenty years has created some very lovely and intensely erotic art male nude work. Having also lived in both Spain and Peru his work has a natural tendency to focus on the Latin male.

Fehl Cannon favours photographing on location in Tennessee on a 100 acre Wilderness Land Trust and in the alleys, basements and bedrooms of Washington. His models are university students, athletes, dancers, waiters, guys met casually in the gym and friends. They want to make a little extra money for beer and dope, or simply to get some photographic record of their bodies while they are in their prime. They express a need to experience themselves via someone else's perception, as objects of the other's desire and admiration.

Above all, Fehl Cannon's work is about permission -- permission to look -- permission to admire -- permission to desire. The men he photographs share with him a curiosity about their bodies. Together they improvise with objects that he digs or dreams up. They too, bring their own ideas -- tattoos, piercings, fetish wear and boyfriends.

Cannon's photos use props as symbols -- often chosen for their erotic associations, serving as totems of masculinity, emblems of private and communal fantasies. These symbols can be as direct as a leather codpiece or an erect penis, or as obscure as a dense shadow or a corroded sheet of copper. In his work, Fehl Cannon captures masculine energy, freezing it for our view in a split-second flash.

Fehl Cannon's work has also appeared in The Advocate, The Washington Blade, Uniforms and a book of poetry by Oscar Hernandez.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Traditional Model Poses with a Touch of Fetish", October 17, 2001
This review is from: Totems of Desire (Paperback)
These black & white images of male nude models that Fehl Cannon has photographed are strictly presented here for our pleasure. They are all in traditional poses with some showing just a touch of fetishism, such as leather codpieces, gas masks, ropes, and other material encasing their erect penises. You'll find most are photographed in outdoor settings. Many of the models are muscular & very handsome. I especially liked "Billy" 1997 & "Faun" 1992. Props are used in a very sexy and erotic way. There's lots of eye contact with the camera by the models. You get the feeling they are obsessed with their bodies and really want to be admired for their beauty.

This was my first exposure to Fehl Cannon, a photographer that was unknown to be before this small, but impressive book was published. Born in Georgia, he now lives and works in Washington, D.C. A lot of his models are from Latin America. A wonderful collection of male nude images that I surely enjoyed. I hope a larger collection of his prints are forthcoming in the near future. I look forward to it.

This review is from: Totems of Desire (Paperback)
maybe i'm too knit-picky. maybe i expect too much. or maybe this work isn't as interesting as they want you to think it is. given the descriptions and the cover image you might think that the book is stuffed full of wonderfully subversive imagery focusing on the juxtuposition of masculine bodies and feminine trappings... don't get your hopes up too high, baby. the cover image is the best one in the whole book. the other pics either follow the same mold as any other collection of male nudes, or make faltering attempts at restating the cover picture. personally, i find the cover so intriguing that the entire book (which is exceedingly thin for the price) could have focused on studies of this one man alone. i've not bothered returning the book because i don't feel like dealing with the hassle, but i was sorely dissapointed with this collection; however, it was nice to see a work that used men of color (but there are not as many latinos as the publisher indicated)... i love white guys, so i'm not faulting their presence, but i do feel that they made this out to be a collection of latino nudes and it's not.
