I work at a California prison, which means walking miles outside daily, in the middle of a nowhere valley, where the wind whips in every different direction & rain blows diagonally, not vertically. When it rains, the wind is worse and the average life expectancy of an umbrella is one or two wind bursts. I have gone through dozens of umbrellas. I have bought "guaranteed" umbrellas in the past but they still turn inside out and break. I finally decided to try a vented umbrella but prison regulations do not allow an umbrella with the long tip, like most vented umbrellas have. I finally found this one on Amazon and so far so good. This umbrella is BIG but not cumbersome. It is very sturdy and when the wind was whipping in every which direction, it handled it well and I wasn't worried it would flip inside out like every other one I have used. The first day I used my umbrella, I had 5 compliments -"that's a really nice umbrella!" which is goofy but just exemplifies how desirable a sturdy, functional umbrella is in our work environment. I gave several people item specs so they could also order this umbrella. I don't like having to spend this type of money on an umbrella when so many have failed in the past but if it makes it through one or two rainy seasons, it is well worth the money. One drawback - it is a bit heavy.

Great umbrella, seems like really good quality. ... but man is it huge and heavy. It doesn't fit in my big laptop backpack... It's just over 20 inches long when folded up. It's probably 4-5 times heavier than my other folding umbrella.

When opened, the size is great. Not quite the super-huge umbrella, just full-sized. I really like it, but I do wish it fit in my backpack when folded...

I was tired of cheap, small umbrellas. This product exceeded expectations. I use it for work where I usually wear a suit and carry a briefcase. It is large enough to protect both body and suitcase.

It is larger, so when folded up it may be twice as large as other brands, but is still small enough for easy transport. I have had no issue with wind, and the construction feels sturdy and durable.

Update 6/2013- Had a real test in high wind situation and I must say I am disappointed. It was windy, but not dangerously windy and the umbrella was nearly torn apart. The main rod became bent to the point that I have to manually open it now. It inverted numerous times and connections on the ends in places were torn off.

Overall for moderate conditions, umbrella worked great but with 20mph winds, leave it at home.

It's a pretty large umbrella that still can fit (just barely) inside my backpack, and it appeared to be pretty sturdy. I've had it for about two months now. I've mostly used it in light rain, and it would keep me dry for the most part. However, I began having issues with the water seeping through it on extended walks, or when I would use it, go inside, and use it again in short succession. I suspect that when I shake it off upon entering a building that, because it is vented, the water shakes down into the interior. Then when I use it a few hours later, this trapped water might get stuck in creases and form a sort of water tension bridge that allows water to wick through the material. This theory is giving the benefit of the doubt to the manufacturer, because the alternative is that it is just of inferior quality and soaks through after 20 minutes or so. I've also just noticed significant amounts of rust forming at the joints that are causing rust stains to appear on the fabric and creaking at the joints. I may try to oil the dozens of joints to reduce this problem, but of course then I'll have oil on the inside of an umbrella that also has a dripping problem.

I'd be wary of buying this again. I'd suggest giving the outside some additional water proofing if you get it, and be careful not to invert the umbrella to shake excess water off like you might with a non-vented type.

It broke the second time I opened with a light wind. I though I was getting a strong umbrella but that wasn't the case.

My revision is late because I usually do not use this umbrella unless it's poring cats&dogs.
I use a smaller, lightweight, but double canopy Samsonite umbrella for normal rainy days.

    As for this Totes umbrella....

    Pros:
    -Large canopy
    -Comfortable handle

    Cons:
    -Heavy
-Totes ruined this particular model when they chose polyester over nylon. This material is thicker than what other umbrellas use but that is NOT a good thing. First off, when walking the canopy makes a whoosh-whoosh-whoosh noise as if you are walking with a tent over your head. It is that heavy.
-The most unforgivable transgression is when you reach shelter and close it- What a Mess. The thick material bunches up like one of those thick shower curtains. And it gets water-logged ! Unbelievable.

I am 100% certain that this bunching-up happens to every user but they are not reporting it.

This umbrella was the perfect size I was looking for. Initially it was great, but after the 4th use one of the ribs in the upper part of the umbrella came free of the stitching connecting it to the umbrella. What happens is everytime I close the umbrella, the wire rib sticks out and is beginning to bend. This umbrella was subjected to rain and not high winds so I'm disappointed in how cheap this was made. The lifetime warranty is a joke and should not even be considered when buying this product. It would cost me $6+ to ship it to them plus the $3 dollars for them to return a new or repaired one. I guess I would save a buck or two over buying a new one, but I would have to wait 4-6 weeks for the replacement. I don't mind paying the $3 return shipping but how about you build a better quality umbrella or pick up the cost to ship it back to you.
