Editorial Reviews

A Touch of Frost is one of Britain’s most successful detective series and stars award-winning actor David Jason as Detective Inspector Jack Frost, a policeman with a knack for attracting trouble. Set in the dreary town of Denton, Frost approaches each case with his characteristic dry wit and a sense of moral justice. A Touch of Frost Season 4 includes:

"Paying the Price" – Rendered homeless by his own carelessness after burning his house down, Frost takes on a kidnapping case with the help of WPC Claire Toms. A 24-hour operation at the victim's flat leads to escalating demands from the kidnapper and even Frost finds it difficult to keep cool under the pressure.

"Unknown Soldiers" – Frost finds himself staring down the barrel of a gun when he interviews a suspected drug dealer and then finds himself confronted by an armed robbery. But, he's far more intrigued by the death of a young soldier at an army camp. It's strictly off limits to police, but that has never stopped Frost before.

"Fun Times for Swingers" – Frost encounters the world of male escorts in this episode but he has a rude introduction when a naked woman throws herself from the roof of Denton Church. Frost uncovers a snapshot of a man with whom she had an affair, but the next day the man himself is found murdered.

"The Things We Do for Love" – The savage murder of a young physiotherapist sends Frost in pursuit of the names in her electronic organizer. The prime suspect is a pillar of the local church, but Frost's conviction that he is the killer is refuted by a water-tight alibi.

"Deep Waters" – Frost is determined to make two suspects confess after a vicious knife attack, but an adversarial solicitor points out that justice has to be done despite what Frost's instinct tells him. That aside, can he trust his hunch about a mysterious assailant at the local university... or not?

Frost is an unpolished Morse who deals with real crime in a mid-
sized city.He dislikes authority,is not neat,but is clever,brave,
lucky,and emphathetic with victims.Each episode is 100 minutes,and
takes 5 weeks to produce (an attractive bonus feature is an interview with David Jason). There is good character development
of each of the principles, and for each episode Frost has a different partner (this is deliberate). The acting, photography
and music are excellent.Small comic elements present a contrast
to the main story line.Eventually, there may be 10 sets in this
series, and I intend to get all of them.Series 4 is one of the
best, because of the interview, and stories such as the first
(kidnapped sister).

1.0 out of 5 stars A disservice to the series, April 20, 2006
This review is from: A Touch of Frost - Season 4 (DVD)
I own and have enjoyed Seasons 1-3, but Season 4 represents a sharp downturn in the quality of writing. The dialogue was terrible in the first episode - the characters seemed to always be either shouting or sulking, often both within the same scene.

The second episode had improved dialogue, but the plot made no sense, and had very little suspense. The mystery is basically solved when a minor character simply confesses his involvement, and the bad guy (who's been onscreen for less than a minute by now), confesses as well. I don't have the heart to watch the remaining episodes for a while - barring a massive improvement in the writing, the Frost series ends at Season 3 for me.

With each succeeding season of A Touch of Frost I watch, I become more eager to view the next. I didn't think I could like another detective as much as the incomparable Morse, but Jack Frost runs a close second. Frost is an unorthodox detective, though not in the same manner as Morse, and his personal life is just as muddled. However, in Jack's case, detection is his higher priority. Bring on season 5!
