Book Description

August 4, 2005
Boston private investigator Alex Rourke is looking forward to the weekend. He's heading to Vermont to visit his girlfriend, and also plans to do some checking on his latest missing person: a young man named Adam Webb who made the same journey, and never came back. But the truth about Adam Webb isn't the only secret buried in the Green Mountain woods. Hikers have gone missing, a prostitute has been murdered and something sinister is happening in the ghost-town of North Bleakwater. It soon becomes clear that in the mountains, who you trust can means the difference between life and death. And Alex will have to make decisions with his heart as well as his head. Because a single bullet is about to blow his world to pieces.

More About the Author

John writes crime, with the occasional spot of comedically over-the-top noir (see 'Hardboiled Jesus') on the side. He's one part of a terrifying gestalt entity that he forms, Power Ranger-style, with writer of almost-SF urban thrillers Sean Cregan. Together they form MegaWriter and fight villains in the rubble of humanity's last cities.

Which is another way of saying "he also writes under the pen name 'Sean Cregan', whose author page you might also find here on Amazon, and you should check out those books too because they're very good".

This review is from: Touch of Ghosts (Paperback)
Private Investigator Alex Rourke is the voice of the book and although not as 'hard-boiled' as the Mike Hammer type detective, the short, sharpish sentences reminded me of that style. Whilst this meant sentences were clear and to the point, I couldn't feel any warmth for Rourke.

The setting of a small town in the woods of Vermont worked well, with an old 'ghost town' that served it's purpose along with various characters who fit as occupants of the town. The story was okay, and did have an atmospheric quality but the style of writing and [my] resulting lack of concern for the characters left me feeling indifferent.
