This review is from: Touch of Ghosts (Paperback)
Private Investigator Alex Rourke is the voice of the book and although not as 'hard-boiled' as the Mike Hammer type detective, the short, sharpish sentences reminded me of that style. Whilst this meant sentences were clear and to the point, I couldn't feel any warmth for Rourke.
The setting of a small town in the woods of Vermont worked well, with an old 'ghost town' that served it's purpose along with various characters who fit as occupants of the town. The story was okay, and did have an atmospheric quality but the style of writing and [my] resulting lack of concern for the characters left me feeling indifferent. |
