Biography

The blues world is full of shadowy figures, names known only from discographies and from the recollections of better-known artists. Johnny Heartsman was one of those shadowy figures. The veteran Bay Area bluesmen spoke about him with awe. They talked about a man who played on literally hundreds of 45s from the mid-1950s until the late 1960s. They talked about a man who was a master of both guitar… Read more in Amazon's Johnny Heartsman Store

Editorial Reviews

From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD

Heartsman cut to the very heart of the blues, providing guitar to sessions in Oakland through the 1950s and 1960s, which won him renown among history-minded musicians and fans in the ensuing years. His early-1990s Alligator debut makes a favorable impression for the inventive cast of his songwriting and the intelligent language of his guitar, keyboards, and flute. Minor drawbacks: Heartsman struggles a little as a singer, and his idea of funk (e.g., 'Endless" and 'Oops") relies on musty 1970s formulae. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993

3.0 out of 5 stars Johnny tries too hard!, May 3, 2001

This review is from: Touch (Audio CD)
When a man who had an R&B hit in 1957 gets to cut an album for Alligator records in 1991 it's only natural that he wants to show the range of his talents. Unfortunately producer Dick Schurman didn't manage to curb his inclination to show the width of his multi-instrumental talents - and that's the problem with this album. Where he concentrates on playing ONLY B3 or guitar the tracks are strong, but the two versions of "Tongue" have him playing flute and Bass Guitar ( as well as the unexpurgated version having J'neen on vocals and a brass section )and it muddies the mix. It might also have been better to have only used his road band of Rich Forman (guitar) Artis Joyce ( Bass) and Big John Evans (drums) because they clearly understand what he does best which is up-tempo driving blues. There's the basis of a good album here, but it wasn't realised by this release.
