Customer Reviews

The pacing is good, keeping the story interesting and flowing.
Robert Carnevali
There were so many point of view jumps that I got dizzy trying to keep up, including point of view shifts for characters that weren't even central to the story.
A. Champion
I think this is one of those stories that just gives you hope and wants to make you believe in the healing power of a love.

I'd rate this about 4.5 stars, rounded up for Amazon's rating system. It's a very rich and rewarding tale with deeply-detailed and three-dimensional characters.

Kaden is 19 and suffered a ton of past abuse. The result is that he's scarred physically, mentally, and emotionally. He's on the short side, and large men generate panic attacks and flashbacks in him. Because of this, he can't keep a job for very long. When he loses his most recent one, the agent at the employment agency recommends he take a job for three months as a cook at his cousin Logan's ranch in Montana. With little choice, Kaden accepts and soon meets Logan.

Logan is large, but quite sweet and considerate. It surprises and confuses him that he seems to find an attraction to Kaden, especially since he's never in his life felt an attraction to another man before. It also frustrates him and tugs at his heart that Kaden is so afraid of him. He quickly surmises that some abuse occurred to Kaden in his past, leaving Kaden afraid of people, and terrified of large men. All he wants to do now is to ease Kaden's mind and help him heal.

The characters are nicely developed in this story. Kaden, Logan, and Shea (Logan's sister) are complex characters with distinct personalities. It's rewarding to watch these three very different characters interact. Logan and Shea are caring and gentle and try to help Kaden, but aren't sure the best way to do it. They don't know what happened in Kaden's past and realize that it will be some time before Kaden can verbalize the past abuse he's suffered. All they have to work on is what they can observe as Kaden simply isn't opening up to them. Still, they try, and it's these interactions that work their way into the readers' hearts.

Okay I have to say it -- I loved this story, though the plot offers no real surprises, it is well written and keeps the reader from being able to put the book down. The author draws the reader into Kaden's world and you can't help but feel his pain and loneliness. You can only hope that everything will turn out okay. There were times when I just wanted to say "how much more can one person take?" yet the author brings it all together and makes it worth your while to read. The characters are interesting and well developed, even if Logan does occasionally come off as too perfect, it is just what Kaden needs. There are some steamy m/m scenes in the story which fit in perfectly as far as the context of the story. But I had a problem with Logan. He seemed really sure of himself and knowledgeable for someone who had never been attracted to a man before Kaden so it did seem a little fantastical, but again it works. I think this is one of those stories that just gives you hope and wants to make you believe in the healing power of a love. I would recommend this story to anyone, even those who don't particularly like m/m stories. - Ana

I am about halfway through and I don't think I can bring myself to finish. The writing isn't terrible, but I think a good editor would be of enormous help, especially to get rid of the repetitious phrasing. Some of the plot devices seemed contrived and broke any suspension of belief beyond recovery. I also found the characters to be off-putting. Kaden is basically written as a girl with a penis. I couldn't imagine any man, even one so severely abused, acting and responding the way he does. Not to mention that his reasoning doesn't always make sense in the context of the story. (e.g. Leather pants? Really? Why would someone who is terrified about attracting attention to himself not only own a pair of leather pants, but go out dancing in them? Not to mention being able to afford a pair given his financial issues...)
I understand that m/m fiction has become a popular and lucrative genre to write in, but this author should really stick to straight romances which is really all this is. And not a very original one at that. If you want good m/m fiction, I might suggest authors such as W.A. Hoffman or Josh Lanyon instead.

This book was beautifully written. It told the story of a nineteen year old Kaden who had been sexualy abused by his step-father, both emotionally and physically scarred he bounces from job to job because of his fear of large men. After gettting fired from his latest job he goes back to the labor agency and is offered a job a ranch Tony's cousin Logan. He accepts the job to cook and clean for Logan and the other ranch hands. Along his journey he forms a bond with Logan and begins to form a relationship with him.
Logan is the ranch owner who hires Kaden and right off the bat he can see that Kaden has had a rough life he wants to help him and along the way discovers a few surpising things about his sexuality...I don't want to spoil the ending or the heart-warming moments so buy this book, it was worth every penny I spent on it

When you begin a book by recalling the events of a sexual attack of a young man by an older step-parent you know that you are in for quite a ride. Touch Me Gently is the story of a damaged young man Kaden, and his difficult journey to self-acceptance and through that accepting the love of another man.

Kaden is the victim of a physically, mentally and sexually abusive stepfather. This creates a pattern of self-mutilation, no self-esteem, haunting nightmares and the inability to maintain a lifestyle or relationship, so Kaden wanders from place to place and from job to job. A difficult situation at a new job ends up with Kaden leaving for a ranch in Montana and taking a job as the cook. Logan Michael, the ranch owner and Kaden's employer sees the results of Kaden's life and find himself shocked at his own attraction to his young cook. With the help of his sister Shea, Logan is able to reach the inner soul of Kaden and help him heal his internal and external wounds while both men discover the healing powers of love and conditional devotion.

In truth, this is an emotionally difficult story to read but so worth it! J. R. Loveless has given us a full plate with every page but combines it all together in a story that will make you cry, laugh and smile. You carry the life of Kaden with you throughout the story and ride his emotional rollercoaster with a sigh of relief when you can finally see that life can go on successfully and happily if you are willing to open your eyes and your heart and accept that you are worthy of all the great things that life can bring.
