You don't need to swipe the whole screen for gestures like bamboo cutting or enemy counters.

You can do them anywhere on the screen, and at any size, as long as the direction is right.

So you can, say, take your thumb off the right stick, and swipe in the corner, and it'll take.

For the boss fights, i recommend swiping multiple times for each swipe prompt. Sometimes the screen doesn't properly register a swipe on the first time, so getting two or three swipes in per prompt ensures you don't make any mistakes.
