Some albums take time to warm up to. Not this one.

Breezing through several different flavours of power pop in under forty minutes, Brakes churn out perfectly crafted songs while making it seem completely effortless. The lyrics are clever, without being self-conscious and the hooks are irresistible. With most songs clocking in under four minutes, there is simply not a wasted note. Whether it's a rocking stomper or a country tinged jangle, the end result is the same: a catchy, infectious tune that leaves you charmed before you even know what hit you.

Without a doubt one of the best albums of 2009, filled with unrestrained pleasures from the first listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Album of the Year, December 24, 2009
This review is from: Touchdown (Audio CD)
The Brakes began with a noisy bang a few years ago and now they are the super band England projected them to be.

This is beautiful, extremely well-written dream pop, noise pop, rock and roll alternative English music that is the best of an okay year of music, with too many English bands going electronic for no good reason and falling into traps of self-indulgent art pop that fizzles.

The Brakes have hit where they were aiming for with this album.

A classic album.

6 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Eclectic Band, January 27, 2010

Good band, many influences. Their style seems to change by song. That can be annoying at first listen, but it starts to feel like a mix tape after a few listens. Enjoyable, but not great.
