More About the Author

Laura Lagana is an author, professional speaker, nurse, and volunteer. She is a coauthor of Chicken Soup for the Volunteer's Soul, Serving Time-Serving Others, The Quick and Easy Guide to Project Management, and Serving Productive Time. She is also author and editor of Touched by Angels of Mercy, as well as a contributing author in other books, including several in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series.

At the age of sixteen, undecided about which career path to choose, Laura took her friend's advice and became a candy striper at a local hospital to observe the role of the professional nurse--advice that helped her decide. Five years later, she graduated from the Bryn Mawr Hospital School of Nursing in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.

During her twenty-eight years as a registered nurse, often aided by valiant volunteers, Laura harvested scores of unforgettable experiences from the clinical areas of medical-surgical, intensive care, and orthopedics.

A volunteer for most of her life, she admits to reaping immeasurable rewards and gaining insight into the human condition. Today she is an intensive care unit volunteer with the Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington, Delaware, and a medical text narrator for the Division for the Visually Impaired.

In 1997, steered by the winds of change tugging at her heartstrings, Laura made a gradual transition from a career in nursing to that of writing and speaking, where she savors the opportunity to follow her lifelong passion as she combines the best of all three worlds.

Laura works with her husband, Tom (coauthor of Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul), in their own business, presenting and facilitating seminars for clients on both sides of the razor wire throughout the United States. Applying the knowledge gleaned from her years in health care and lived-life experiences, Laura delights in helping people become their best.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Judyful Review Of Touched By Angels Of Mercy., February 7, 2002
This book is captivating from the very first page. I did not want to put it down and became totally absorbed reading the wonderful, compassionate, unique and stimulating short stories, poems and amusing cartoons. This collection of heartwarming and uplifting stories is especially significant to read and enjoy after what our country has been through since September 11, 2001.
We have all been deeply influenced or touched by Angels Of Mercy
sometime in our life and this book touched my heart and emotions in the most amazing and satisfying ways. It is the ideal gift to give to a friend or family member or especially to bring to someone who is in the hospital as a patient or a worker. Laura Lagana has captured the essence of humanity and I doubt that anyone will remain the same after reading this timeless book. I know it has changed my outlook on life in a positive way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touched By Angels of Mercy, August 27, 2002
I salute Laura Lagana for her timely efforts in producing this book. Now more than ever, during the nursing shortage, nurses need to be reminded of the contribution that they make and feel their caring efforts are not in vain. This collection of stories is a valuable asset to the nursing community as well as the consumer. It includes real-life stories of events and emotions that were experienced by nurses, families, and friends. Nurses need to read this book to remind themselves of the power of their caring and to share in the feedback from the stories that validate their practice and encourage them to continue their selfless dedication to a demanding profession. Consumers need to read this book to get a first-hand look at just what nursing is, what nurses do, and feel the power of it's impact on the lives of those nurses care for through these touching stories. Laura Lagana did a superb job at providing a cross section of stories that touch the heart and foster healing. I encourage everyone to read this book and/or show your support of nursing by giving this book as a gift to a nurse. THANK YOU Laura!
