Book Description

April 27, 2010

They live ordinary lives, but they are extraordinary. They are the Offspring, children of a mysterious experiment gone awry—and they are in terrible danger.

Nicholas Braden has an uncanny psychic talent for finding things—which is why he's been recruited for a covert government program designed to hunt down terrorists. While his work for a shady controller named Darkwell is leading him down some very questionable alleyways, it's also bringing him closer to Olivia, Darkwell's stunning young assistant. A "good girl" with a wild, secret side, Olivia tempts Nicholas in ways he never believed possible—and in his business, a loss of control could prove fatal.

But there is something not right about the operation. And as Nicholas and Olivia's passion reaches a white-hot intensity, chilling reversals of good and evil, of right and wrong, suddenly threaten their very survival.

About the Author

Since she was a kid, Jaime Rush devoured books on unexplained mysteries and psychic phenomena. She knew she would be published, marry a fabulous guy, and win a Toyota Supra. Missing the romance, relationship drama, and action of her favorite television shows—X-Files, Roswell, and Highlander—she created her own mix in the Offspring series.

More About the Author

Since I was a kid, I devoured books on unexplained mysteries and psychic phenomena. I knew I would be published, marry a fabulous guy, and win a Toyota Supra. Missing the romance, drama, and action of my favorite television shows, X-Files, Roswell, and Highlander, I created my own mix in the Offspring series (HarperCollins). A PERFECT DARKNESS (RT Book Reviews Reviewer's Choice Award Winner) kicked off my paranormal romantic suspense series. See the books in order below a New York Times bestselling anthology with authors Lynsay Sands and Pamela Palmer, includes an unrelated Offspring story.

The Offspring series is about a group of twenty-somethings who live ordinary lives but possess extraordinary psychic abilities. They are the Offspring of parents involved in a mysterious experiment gone awry. Sexy...dangerous...outcasts... They are being hunted by the government and others like them. Together they must find the truth and fight an enemy out to destroy them.

Though the books are part of a series, I've tried to make them as stand-alone as possible. In particular, Burning Darkness and Beyond the Darkness only jump off from the main arc of the first three books.

I also have an alter ego. Jaime Rush is a pseudonym for Tina Wainscott, my real name. As Tina, I wrote 18 books for St. Martin's Press and Harlequin, some of which have won Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart award, the Maggie, and RT Book Reviews Reviewer's Choice Awards. I am in the process of bringing out many of these books as e-books!

4.0 out of 5 stars Book 3 in Jamie Rush's Offspring series, May 20, 2010
This review is from: Touching Darkness (Mass Market Paperback)
Nicholas Branden has the ability to find lost things and people and because of this he is brought in to work on a government program that can help save lives. At least that is what he was told. Leader of the secret program, Darkwell, is hiding something and it is making Nicholas feel uneasy. Not until he is approached by the Rogues, enemies of Darkwell, does he start to ask questions and investigate further. Which include the circumstances around his father's death.

His inquires land him on the wrong side of Darkwell's wrath and he is now teaming up with those he thought were his enemies, and he isn't alone. Olivia, Darkwell's assistant, is a good girl who follows the rules. That is until Nicholas has her questioning everything she has been taught and has her feeling desire for the man that has her on the run from deadly enemies.

I was not sure about Nicholas at first. In Out of the Darkness he came off as someone who wouldn't really go the distance to find out the truth like the others. But he surprised me and I liked his character. Like the other Offsprings, he wants to know the truth surrounding his father's death and it all leads back to Darkwell. I liked his ability and his level headiness was a nice break for Lucas, who might lose it any minute and Eric's overbearing attitude. One think I didn't like was how he try's to distance himself from those who care about him. He doesn't give them the option just makes that decision for them. I didn't really care for Olivia. It felt like she wanted to stay blind and hide her head in the sand instead of facing the truth head on. It made her come off as a bit naive. In the end she does make the right choice but I felt like she waited too long to make what was an obvious choice.

I was happy to see my favorite Eric is still his sarcastic, brash, aggressive self. I've said it before, but I really can't wait for his book. Lucky for me his book is next. A character I'm not sure I should admit to liking is Sayre Andrus, who is brought in to be Darkwell's puppet but he has an agenda of his own. There are no redeeming qualities about this made, he really is just evil. I don't know if I would go as far as calling him my favorite character but he is one of the best written in the series. He comes off as so vile that you actually despise him and the man is fictional! One of my favorite quotes from the book comes from him.

"Maybe you better outline what, exactly, they consider strange. I don't want to get blown away 'cause I scratched my ass"

Touching Darkness continues an already interesting and addictive story. The Offspring's fight gets dangerous but with new allies they take one step closer to finding out the truth but also run into more questions. I'm excited for the new twists and characters and look forward to the next installment in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching Darkness, February 14, 2011
This review is from: Touching Darkness (Mass Market Paperback)
Nicholas Braden has a special talent. He can locate people and things that no one else can. His work with the Bone Finder organization has captured the attention of a secret government project headed by an immoral man, who wants to control individuals with special abilities and use them as weapons. Nicholas decides to join this covert operation believing he will be finding kidnap victims and saving the world from terrorists. The longer he's with the organization the more questions arise about the veracity of the work. There's one thing that plagues his mind more than all his questions, and that's his bosses stunning assistant.

Olivia believes she's serving God and country. She has been schooled on the rights and wrongs of covert life. Do as you are told, never doubt your leader. Don't get involved with your co-workers or heaven forbid anyone beneath you. Olivia has never had problems following the rules before but a recently acquired employee has turned Olivia's world upside down. Nicholas makes her want more, all the things she cannot have.

Will Olivia obey the laws set before her or follow her heart? What happens when Nicholas asks one question too many? Can they escape the clutches of this evil organization before it's too late?

Touching Darkness takes you into the dark, often scary, and unpredictable world of the Offspring. The Offspring are individuals that were born with psychic abilities making them very powerful. This also makes them highly sought after. People are coming out of the woodwork all the time to capture or kill them. This rogue group has become a family to be reckoned with. Their goals are simple protect the family and eliminate the enemy. Will this family ever be able to accept two former enemy agents into their midst?

Touching Darkness is a love story at its core but it is also about independence. Olivia is a character that has followed the rules her entire life, but when she meets Nicholas she begins questioning what these rules have actually done for her. This was my favorite part about Touching Darkness. Watching Olivia discover her individual identity is beautiful. She is very reserved at the beginning but becomes this fiery woman to be reckoned with. I think she put it best when she told Nicholas "You woke up this Tiger inside me, and now you're going to make her purr." That is possibly one of my favorite lines ever because it totally represents her character and what her man has brought to her life. She went from taking demands to making them! Nicholas and Olivia are extremely sensual. They tempt and tease each other throughout, it is so hot. This is the third book in the series but I do not feel like it is necessary to have read the previous titles to enjoy Touching Darkness. Touching Darkness is a sexy paranormal thriller with guts. Jaime Rush has created likable characters that grab your attention and leave you wanting more.
