Book Description

April 2002
So few countries are like Japan. It is a place where everyone is good at their jobs and where crime is low. It is a place where ancient traditions blend with modern technology and modern lifestyles. Japan continually adapts to the changing of the times but her heart still retains her unique identity. There is a cultural universe inside every Japanese individual that is both logical and mysterious. Imagine a place where communication revolves around silence and ambiguity and you begin to understand something of the Japanese heart.

This book explores those areas as well as what common everyday life is like. It presents insights into history, culture, and current trends, as well as personal experiences by the author. A concise analysis of lifestyles is portrayed of the children, adults and senior citizens. Touching the Heart of Japan presents all these things and more.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Many books frequently take a dry, intellectual approach towards cultural studies that cause some readers to lose interest. Too often, more emphasis is placed on complex verbiage rather than on just sharing information in a personal way. This book was intentionally designed to be straightforward and easy to read. It delivers the material in a logical manner with topical divisions that flow from one subject to the next. It is also an in-depth discussion that peers into the common life of Japanese society while highlighting some elements of history, current events and culture.

I enjoyed writing this book. It was a 3-year project that I consider to be a labor of love. My experiences with the Japanese and their culture were an inspiration that gave birth to this book and it is my hope that it will be an enjoyment for all to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed Review, April 8, 2004

This review is from: Touching the Heart of Japan (Paperback)
It was clear that the author put much time and effort into this book. The information was packed in there and interesting. I appreciated the author's own personal experiences and his feelings of being an American coming into Japanese society. There are two caveats to the book, though. The first is the author's obvious bias on certain subjects. For instance, on pages 156 & 157, he writes "The heart of the Japanese woman is sweet... they are fragile, both physically and emotionally...they ARE feminine and relish in their feminity...they ooze with feminity" Ugh! Those generalizations are nauseating. The over idealization of the Japanese culture is also apparent at times and one cannot help but roll one's eyes when reading these sections. Another caveat about the book is the author's lack of citations on facts and statistics. There were many parts of the book which intrigued me but due to lack of citations, I could not research them further. Those two caveats aside, it is an excellent and interesting read. I suspect that it is a self-published work because it is ripe with syntactical errors and the text did not flow so it could be cumbercome at times.

I have recently finished reading this fine book. If you have an interest in learning about the Japanese people this book is a great place to start. A great many subjects are discussed in a pleasant easy to read format. Each chapter is like a window into Japanese culture.
