Editorial Reviews

Ed Harris stars in this emotionally charged drama of love and redemption by writer-directors Logan and Noah Miller. The Millers co-star as Lane and Clint Winston, twin brothers from a working class background who pursue professional baseball careers while trying to save their homeless, alcoholic father Charlie (Ed Harris). Touching Home is a coming-of-age drama, an account of overcoming enormous odds and a tale about family and the bonds that matter.  Inspired by a True Story.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST INDIE FILM OF 2010 January 18, 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
In 1996-97, independent films reached what we now see was its one-decade plateau. John Sayles had made a number of successful, low-budget movies. Quentin Tarantino was hotter than a pistol. Harvey Weinstein was said to be the most powerful executive in Hollywood.

Three films directed or screenwritten by young, or at least relatively new filmmakers, were all the rage. There was Sling Blade by Billy Bob Thornton; Swingers from Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau; and Good Will Hunting, written by and starring the duo of Matt Damon with Ben Affleck.

These films inspired a cult of screenwriting classes, seminars on independent movie making, and "meet 'n' greets" between screenwriting hopefuls and development executives. The Sundance Film Festival, Cannes, and other festivals promised moviegoers first-time glimpses at The Next Big Thing. The Independent Film Channel became popular cable fare.

A decade or so later, the concept that with some credit cards, a dream and the sweat of one's creative brow, you too can be the next John Cassevetes, has produced almost as many disappointments as a weekend splurge in Las Vegas, often with far more damaging economic results. Now, just when it looked like great moviemaking was a lost art; that only huge studios had the wherewithal to make and market a hit film; and that spirituality, family values and character arc were lost altogether in Tinseltown, mocked as shrill voices of conservatism, comes Noah and Logan Miller and their absolutely wonderful Touching Home.

Describing this film and its backstory is to give witness to a literal miracle, for the story of the twins, the story the movie tells, and how it all happened, are a collection of parables, allegories and metaphors of their lives . . . and of life!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good film about family dynamics February 4, 2011
We enjoyed this movie. Ed Harris was perfect in the role of the alcoholic father, he was so believable in the role. I've always respected his work and this one even bumped that up a notch for me. The twin sons acting wasn't quite on par of Harris, but still good. I did have to ask "which one was that" to my husband a few times, but he didn't have the same problem I had knowing which one was which. If you have an alcoholic in the family it will especially touch home with you, but I think it was a good rainy day film for anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the purchase February 4, 2011

Touching Home is a wonderful little film with extraordinary performances from Harris, Dourif, and Forrester. Because the twins are identical, it takes a bit of concentration to follow which twin is saying what. I recommend you also pick up the book written by the Millers which chronicles the ups and downs of producing their own film, "You're either in, or your in the way".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie June 5, 2012
I watched this movie without knowing any of the back story behind its production. Overall, I found it to be a very authentic story about two young men (twins) trying to come to grips with their life after baseball. They must also struggle with their father, an alcoholic man living in his truck. The story is a good one and the acting is very good. I thought the ending was not quite what it could have been, but the big surprise was the realization that the story was based on a true story. The two twin actors wrote the script and promised their father they would produce the movie and get Ed Harris to play his role.

4.0 out of 5 stars Movie with lots of heart April 12, 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Touching Home. I stumbled upon this movie because I was looking for an Ed Harris movie. Lo and behold, it was filmed mostly in Western Marin, specifically in the little town of Nicasio, my home town. The photography was excellent for first time movie makers. I compliment Noah and Logan Miller for keeping their promise to their Father against all odds. The were told time and time again, it couldn't be done. By hard work and persistence they prevailed. My compliments for Ed Harris for keeping his promise to star in the film and to all those who believed in the movie with their time, effort and financial backing. I've heard nothing but good things from their step-father and family members. It's a good movie, I highly recommend it not just because it was made in Nicaso, but because it was made with two young men's dreams. You can't go wrong with watching this movie; or reading the corresponding book. After viewing Touching Home, you will ask yourself why it didn't become more popular in the theaters. In the future when I search out films featuring Ed Harris, I will also look for anything written or directed by Logan and Noah Miller. I hope that they find themselves making more movies in the future. Well done "brothers." Meanwhile I will do my best to promote more sales of this excellent DVD.
