After getting this for my son I later learned the Kurio has very mixed reviews -- basically very low & very high (that was on Amazon earlier today, this evening I cannot find those reviews online, at least not easily). Defective new products are apparently common as are a number of problems

I could not get the device set up thru about the third step, connecting to my wi-fi at home. No other device in the house, permanent or guest, has ever had a problem with "poor internet connection" -- generally the connection is very strong/excellent & never, ever, weak, etc. While setting up the kurio to wi-fi no other device was on the network.

Using the advanced settings on the kurio I observed the device repeatedly connecting, and when it appeared successful, repeat the connection attempt process (what appeared to be an infinite do-loop). I tried this a few times, doubled-checked the wi-fi password a few times, and observed that each failed attempt to connect to the internet seemed to drain the battery 2-3% !!! That's just to establish a failed, or very transient, connection...which indicates the battery charge life is pretty short.

I've also experienced a number of sudden inexplicable shut-downs of the device -- and well within the time limit I'd set it up to stay on for. That's another recurring problem I read about after getting this.

KURIO SUPPORT IS EVASIVE: I tried to report the problem via Kurio's on-line support link. They use a security image one has to re-type (crooked letters/words). The one offered was obvious, and rejected. Clicking on the image to try a new one did not generate a new security image, it just deleted my input.

We received the Kurio 7 from my in-laws for my son's seventh birthday in early January 2013. On the surface it appears to be a really cool gadget but we've experienced many headaches. First, I would use the settings regarding the time of day you allow your child to use the device and the number of times a day. No matter what time it actually was, it wouldn't let my child access the device. I eventually just turned off the settings altogether so that it was usable. Next, after about the first week it stopped connecting to the internet. No matter how many times we tried (over the course of at least one week) could we actually get the internet connected. It would recognize the existence of our WiFi but we would enter the WEP key and it would act like it was going to hook up and then nothing. I gave up for about a week and then I took it to my in-laws to see if it would hook up to their WiFi and it did. Strange. Brought it home, nothing. I set the device aside for about two weeks. Out of curiosity I tried again today and this time it worked, mind you it hasn't worked in a month or so. Relieved I continued with my initial efforts: to download a game on the device that my older son likes to play. I was able to get the Amazon App Store downloaded. However, when entering my information in order to sign into my Amazon account, it took over ten tries because the keyboard would enter erroneous characters or not enter the desired character at all. It was very bizarre. It wasn't even that I was striking an adjacent key: for example, I pressed the 'a' key and an 'a' and a 'p' character popped up at the same time. I don't understand. Eventually I got the device connected with my Amazon account, just to find the desired game isn't available for download to the Kurio (I'm assuming compatibility issues).Read more ›

The in-laws got this for my 5 yr old daughter for Christmas, she loves it. Setup was quick and really easy. Couple of minor issues: most of the educational games are a little too difficult for her, at least the ones she wants to play. There is no Google play store, the kurio store or amazon app store, they offer another store you can download that offers thousands of free apps, I couldn't get that one to download. Being a girl, there's not that many free dress up apps out there on those stores (her favorites are on my android phone). Battery lasts quite long, especially since we're still working on not leaving a game on. Nice parental features. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because no play store on an android tablet and the other store wouldn't download.
