Sarah Storme grew up in New Orleans, the city of music, fun, and food. After a year of college, she dropped out anod ran off to Alaska to enjoy a taste of the Wild West pipeline days. Three years later, she returned to the Lower 48 and earned a master's degree in engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He heard a rustling noise to his left. He thought it was one of the officers, but he turned anyway. His neighbor’s porch light reflected off the barrel of the pistol.

As close as they were standing, Matt knew it was pointed at Jackie and not him. This man was trying to shoot the woman he loved.

He couldn’t let that happen.

He grabbed her shoulders and swung them both around. Facing her, he felt something slam into his back at the same time he heard a pop, and then another. He had no idea what was going on. All he knew was that he had fallen forward against Jackie and she held him as they sank to the ground together.

Little white lights danced before his eyes, playing across Jackie’s face and then blocking it out completely. He tried to talk to her, but he couldn’t make a sound. His ears buzzed, and the white lights faded to red.

And then there was nothing.

More About the Author

I'm an engineer. No, really. I grew up in New Orleans, the granddaughter of a Cajun. After a year in college, I ran off to Alaska during the Pipeline Days (the real Wild West). Loved every second of it! I returned to school at The University of Texas, where I earned a BS and MS in Civil Engineering. I'm fortunate enough to have lived all over the country, and have even been to Siberia for work. I write every moment I'm not working; I have an incredibly understanding and supportive husband!
