I knew nothing about lobstering when I picked up this book, though I knew a little about Crash. I'm from Maine, born and raised, yet knew absolutely nothing about life on Matinicus. Upon delving into the world of a sternman through the eyes and mind of Crash Barry, immediately I was living vicariously through a passionate heart and wild, almost untamed soul. Free, but driven.
Within the pages of this wonderfully bound and lettered book are the tales of an era not so long gone, akin to life known to the cowboys of old wild west. Forgo the horse, the steed of choice is a lobster boat. Trade the dusty grizzled cowboy for a salty old timer, hardened by years of hauling lobster traps on the harsh Atlantic ocean. Living by a drink, fight, mate mantra, on the seedy shores of Matinicus they are the cowboys of the open water. Here life is different, some things for the better, others, not so much. Yet, throughout the weathered, hardened, cold exterior of Crash's life on Tough Island, there is joy, beauty and deep, rich culture that only our writer could bring to us with such wonder and humor.

I really enjoyed this book! As an Island resident who also holds a lobster license, I could really identify with the details of the story, right down to the repetitive meals and the sheer exhaustion of being a lobster fisherman. The characters are so true to life, they make you want to read more. Mr. Barry has captured the strange beauty and loneliness that Island living is all about....highly recommended to all!

Crash Barry couldn't have done a better job at revealing the essence of life as a sternman on Matinicus. I know this, because I was once one, too. It never seems to become a permanent job for too many. For most, it's just a way to make money when nothing else seems to work out. For some, it's the rare time to stop and consider, before getting back on with life. Crash captured it perfectly. It's well worth a read or two.

I enjoyed the stories of the island that I remembered as a small child. Mr. Barry brought back many memories of the Matinicus waterfront and the island landscape. I thoroughly enjoyed it
