3.0 out of 5 stars Disjoint history of the San Francisco PD, August 7, 2006

This review is from: The Toughest Gang in Town: Police Stories From Old San Francisco (Paperback)
Mullen's book contains an interesting collection of incidents and characters; however, it is limited by the writer's style. The chapters range widely in size and seem to be written as seperate articles rather than as a whole book, thus information may be repeated, or contradicted, in adjacent chapters.

A good description of late 19th and early 20th century policing that could be improved with by more thorough editing.

4.0 out of 5 stars The definitive history of the SF Police, May 10, 2010
This review is from: The Toughest Gang in Town: Police Stories From Old San Francisco (Paperback)
This is a fascinating collection of stories about the SF Police Department from one who knows it better than anyone else. Kevin Mullen was the Deputy Police Chief of San Francisco and has written 4 books on SF crime history. It is extremely well researched. I learned about crimes I had never heard about in other crime histories.
