The Toughest?,
By H3@+h "Over 1500 reviews!" (thanks for the helpful review votes) - See all my reviews

I don't know what album this tracklist is from, but my copy of "The Toughest" that I've had for 10 years, is only 11 tracks, and it starts with "Coming in Hot", and ends with "In my Song". I would watch out for this, as you may not get what you're expecting. As for my cd, it's some of the best reggae I've ever heard, and rivals Bob Marley's "Legend" as the best of the genre. Of course "Peter Tosh" has numerous collections out, so you should be able to find what you want on most of them.

The Peter Tosh equivalent to "Legend",

"The Toughest" is the Peter Tosh equivalent to Bob Marley's "Legend" album. Like "Legend", "The Toughest" is a great album and an excellent starting point; but if you want the full effect of both Marley's and Tosh's greatness, you have to delve deeper into their catalogs than simply the "greatest hits" collections.

Crucial to any Collection,

This is one of the greatest reggae cd's of all time! It should be in everyone's collection right next to Bob Marley's 'Legend'. Some people think it's not a fair overview of Tosh's music and I agree (this cd doesn't go near any of his work before 1978 which is actually stronger than anything he did later), but I gave it 5 stars anyway because 1) His later recordings were geared to an international audience and this cd is the perfect introduction to the average Joe who thinks Bob Marley's the only reggae artist worth taking interest in; and 2)His first two albums, 'Legalize It' and 'Equal Rights' are powerful enough by themselves to stand up to any 'best of' cd and it would be too hard to pick tracks for a compilation, making 'Toughest' a perfect 3rd installment to two already classic sets. The three of them together create an excellent trilogy of Peter Tosh greats!.....P.S. As other reviewers have pointed out, the tracklist here does not go with this cd. However there is another 'Toughest' Peter Tosh cd with these tracks and who ever did this page has mixed the wrong cover picture with the wrong tracks! The cd I'm reviewing starts with 'Comming in Hot'.

"One of the all time greatest Reggae albums",

If you like Bob Marley Legends, you will love this. Great Reggae songs like Mystic Man, Bush Doctor, Reggaemylitis and the best Jonny B. Goode rendition since Michael J. Fox on "Back to the Future". A Classic.

A Great Selection of Songs,

I'm a big Bob Marley fan and this was my first Tosh CD. It is really great! In my mind the best songs are Don't Look Back and Bush Doctor.

Lot of reviewers suggest supplementing this Greatest Hits with other albums. Might be a good idea.
But I wanted to add that Toughest has no bad tracks, but is enjoyable from start to finish. If you're not especially a Reggae fan, this is still an album that will have you smiling, singing along, and occasionally thinking about Mr. Tosh's political and mortal battles. So if you think you might not go any further with Reggae than this album, Toughest will stand fine on its own, no problem. Oh, wait a second. If you can program your CD player to Skip that duet with Mic Jagger, THEN you're in business. I wonder if you can scratch a single song off of a CD -- get the player to just jump over it. For a second, I forgot about that one... But there's only that one.

only for those who want best of's,

I don't own this particular album as I tend to stay away from best of's (you miss way too much good music). Having said that I do own 9 Peter Tosh CD's and every song on this album is on those 9. This album does seem to have a pretty fair track list but as with all greatest hit or best of's you miss too many good songs. Peter tosh is one of those artists that you really need to get as many of his individual albums as you can to hear some of his best work. But if you only want the best of's then this one is pretty good but I would recomend you get "Legalize It" and "Equal Rights" to go with it,atleast, otherwise you lose everything on his first 2 solo albums.

Not So Tough,

Even though this album was created immediately after Tosh's death, they still could've done better job than this. A few more tracks from No Nuclear War would've hurt. Lessons In My Life and Nah Goa Jail would of did this album some justice. The Day The Dollar Die, Not Gonna Give It Up (Album Version), & Glass House would of also perfected it, and adding The Toughest would've made since. I know that Legalize It and Equal Rights were made on Columbia Records so I understand why they haven't made the line-up. Overall I give it a C.

Like other Tosh "best of" cds, this one is way too limited in its scope, focusing only on what Tosh did on Capitol records, and therefore eliminates altogether the claasics from "Legalize It," and "Equal Rights." While the material chosen is superb, it is what is not chosen that irritates me. There are better, more complete, collections to get, folks. |
