Biography

Richard Starkey is best known to the world as the Beatles' drummer. As an integral part of the revolutionary 'Fab Four', Ringo Starr helped change the world of pop music. Starr didn't join The Beatles until 1962, after original drummer Pete Best was sacked. As a drummer his proficiency is often under-rated, or derided as simplistic, but he remains an influence on many of today's best rock… Read more in Amazon's Ringo Starr Store

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Capture the Live Experience, June 25, 2004

This review is from: Tour 2003 (Audio CD)
I saw this show at The State Theatre in Easton Pa. It was the smallest venue on the tour and I was in the second row. It was as if Beatlemania never died! I had seen the All Starr Band on every tour since the inception but this show was incredible. So much so that I went to see it again three days later at the PNC Bank Arts Center - the local amphitheater. All of the intimacy was gone and the show was less than thrilling by comparison. I love Ringo but lets just say that this recording is representative of the amphitheatre show. The sound is shallow and you get the feeling that the band is just going through the motions. As stated in other reviews, the omission of Paul carrack's incredible rendition of Tempted (A highlight of both shows) is a great disservice to music lovers. Also, the band did an acoustic version of Here Comes the Sun in tribute to George Harrison that was moving. That too is missing. This CD is for fanatics only. I'm a fanatic and yes - I'm glad I bought it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shelia E is still the best thing, next to Ringo on this cd., March 25, 2004

Yes, yes ANOTHER live Ringo Starr cd. It's not the live Ringo stuff you buy these for anymore, it's the All Star Band. I saw this incarnation, and was dissapointed, and this cd shows why. While there are highlights, supplied by Ringo as well as the lovely and talented Shelia E, the rest is boring, and sad to hear. John Waite's two songs while HUGE in their day, did not age well. Paul Carrack on the other hand of his two songs only "Living Years" made me feel like twisting in my seat. The two Colin Hay songs, only "Who Can It Be Now" really makes me want to tap my foot. Despite the many versions of Ringo songs we get at least they make me wawnt to tap my foot.

God bless Ringo for doing this, I enjoy the shows, but this version lacked something (at least in my humble opinion)

That said, Ringo decided to move into the '80s with this version, and while it looked good on paper, this was the least fun (for me) of the 6 times I've seen the All Star Band. My favourite being the versions with Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce, Gary Brooker, as well as the last version with Shelia, Greg Lake, and Roger Hodgson.

While it may sound like I am slagging the All Star's that is not my intention, I love this concept, this was just not as exciting as the previous......if you are a fan buy this, even if you're not buy it anyway, I'm sure you will find something fun.

After thought(s): After I wrote the above review I went back and listend to this again, and again, and again. My conclussion: It is good, and while it seems to be lacking the power of say the last live All Star release it DOES have it's own hot spots.

It is good in it's own right, at first listen you might find the performances uninspired, but give it a few tries, the fun will come, it did and I enjoy this much more then I first did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ringo is Still Great, February 12, 2005

This CD was recorded not long after Ringo's 63rd birthday. But age hasn't stopped Ringo, for he has hit the road again with another "All-Starr Band" lineup. The results are great. Ringo plays his usual assortment of hits, including "It Don't Come Easy," "With a Little Help From My Friends," "Honey Don't" and "Yellow Submarine." The All-Starr Band numbers don't excite me that much, but Ringo's performance is as good as ever. So I can recommend this CD to any Beatles fan.
