4.0 out of 5 stars A Tour Around the World in 1884, by John B. Gorman, November 15, 2010

I was fascinated to read a Southern gentleman's impressions as he literally circumvented the world, visiting Europe, Palestine, Egypt, India, Ceylon, China and Japan - in 1884!
Mr. Gorman's brother was Ossian D. Gorman, editor of the New Era newspaper in Talbotton, Georgia. The travel reports were probably sent to his brother for publication for the benefit of Southern readers.
Since he was of the 'landed gentry', a principal interest during his travels was methods of agriculture used in the various climates and soil conditions, as well as possible crops that might adapt to his native Georgia and northern Florida. A sociable fellow,
he observed and described the different cultures with whom he came in contact, sometimes
reflecting biases of the southern aristocrat of the time, which today's reader may find amusing.
I highly recommend this entertaining account of the world and its customs as it was
in 1884.

Norma Gorman Wright
