Book Description

Cicerone Guides January 1, 2010
Making a horsehoe loop among some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in all the Swiss Alps, the brand new Tour of the Jungfrau Region is destined to become one of the classic walks of Europe. In a journey of 9-10 days the walker visits pastures, ridges, summits and passes, skirts exquisite mountain lakes, and gazes on waterfalls, gorges and glaciers - all in the shadow of such iconic peaks as Wetterhorn, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Accommodation is both plentiful and atmospheric, and the route has lots of bad-weather alternatives. Despite the nearby presence of popular resorts like Grindelwald, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen and Mürren, the Tour of the Jungfrau Region explores some surprisingly remote landscapes, including part of a World Natural Heritage site.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'An interesting long circular walk for those who have done the Tour of Mont Blanc and want to find a route that is less crowded. There are bad-weather alternatives, and shortside walks. As always with Kev Reynolds, the introduction is comprehensive. This route (or part of it) could, I think, be used for an Alpine debut.' Irish Mountain Log Magazine, Summer 2006

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to a unique Swiss Adventure!, January 9, 2009

This review is from: Tour of the Jungfrau Region (Cicerone Guides) (Paperback)
This is a fantastic guide to a part of Switzerland unseen by most English-speaking tourists. The book includes detailed descriptions of the route, information about getting to and from the hike, and information about the mountain lodges along the way. The author does an excellent job of including information about reserving a place in the lodges, lodge etiquette, and tips on selecting from among the various lodging choices.

What I particularly like about the route through the alps described in this book is the opportunity to tailor it to your own hiking preferences. There are lots of places where you could begin or end the hike, as the route runs through the mountains above a valley and each of the tiny towns in the valley has some kind of public transport up to the area where the trail runs. Even though the author describes it as a two week hike, with five days of hiking each week, it's easy to take just part of it, even as little as a day or two.

Like other Cicerone guides, this one has a durable plastic cover, making it exceptionally durable for anyone who wants to bring the book along for the hike. On top of that the text is peppered with lots of great color photos of the hiking trails and alpine scenery along the route, making it a fine read for the armchair traveler and backpacker alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only book you need for hiking in the Jungfrau!, September 19, 2010

I used this guidebook for a recent trip to the Jungfrau region. Immensely helpful! We did a 5 day trip using a mix of the regular/alternate paths described in the book. We searched online for resources but couldn't find anything really helpful. This was the only book we got and it was all we needed. Great information on where to stay and how to hike to different "huts." I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to hike in the Jungfrau region!

This review is from: Tour of the Jungfrau Region (Cicerone Guides) (Paperback)
It is hard to find detailed information on the walks in the Jungfrau Region, so this is very helpful for planning your trip. It offers in depth advice and helpful hints such as bad weather alternatives. Beautiful images!
