5.0 out of 5 stars An accurate presentation of Depeche Mode's Universe December 1, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have had the pleasure of seeing Depeche Mode during their Tour of the Universe twice, in Tampa and Fort Lauderdale. At a total, I have been blessed to seem them five times altogether. This leads me to this DVD capturing a performance of DM during the Tour of the Universe in Spain. Seeing this show twice and purchasing several of the recorded performances, I am very familiar with this tour. [I am a rabid Depeche Mode fan, so my review might be a bit basis, they could put a beat to the Wendy's dollar menu and I would be jovial.] I believe that this movie/DVD concert is an accurate depiction of this tour.

The album they were promoting was "Sounds of the Universe" which was met with a mixed response. I for one love this album and believe it will mature nicely in the DM catalog. The performance showcases five songs (six if the bonus track is included) from the SOTU album. These songs translate majestically when performed live. "In Chains" is an amazing opener, haunting and captivating, reminding me of "Higher Love". "Wrong" is a fierce and powerful in this performance.

As for the classic Depeche tunes, they are all here (for the most part). The blessing and curse of DM is that they have so many songs it is going to be challenging to satisfy everyone. "Personal Jesus" and "Walking in My Shoes" is a couple of the stand outs. I overall am pleased with the set list here and at twenty-one songs, the concert is jammed packed.

After watching this concert I have come to the conclusion that Depeche Mode still "has it". The show had energy, the band was in top form and the crowd was totally "in the zone". The interaction with the crowd and the band at the closure of "Home" was touching, at the risk of sounding a bit maudlin.

Art (as they say) is subjective and in the case of Tour Of The Universe - Live In Barcelona or even Depeche Mode for that matter you either get the magic or you sadly don't and those who do, and or own this 2 disc set are the lucky ones.

If you were one of the estimated 2.7 million fortunate who managed to catch the boys from Basildon live on this tour as I did from the 13th row in Anaheim you can attest to the fact that Depeche live are more of a revival meeting than a rock concert and what director Russell Thomas has managed to capture in this the Mode's first glorious Blu-ray outing borders on the miraculous. Unlike Touring the Angel live in Milan which was a seemingly head-spinning attempt to capture the hearts and eyes of A.D.D./MTV addicts everywhere, TOTU is tasteful, thoughtful and a testament to a director who understands "it's about the performance and the music stupid" as he approaches the task with the TLC of a man (not unlike long-time Depeche creative genius Anton Corbijn) who clearly knows that the best concert films make you feel like you were there or are able to take you back to the 13th row as this production does brilliantly.

With that said however anyone who knows anything about Depeche Mode's Devotee's knows if you put 10 of them in a room together they'll all find something different to winge about (which may be part of their charm). Alright so this might not be the earth shaking Devotional, 101, One Night in Paris or as "dark" as some might like but it's hardly a liability and part of what makes it great. TOTU showcases a band that even after 30 years continues to surprise us, evolve and mature despite some grumbling by well-meaning fans comfortably stuck somewhere between Black Celebration and Songs of Faith and Devotion.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome!!!!! December 2, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
My favorite band since 1984!! This dvd is not as spectacular as 101, Devotional or Touring the Angel, but it is awesome. I saw Depeche Mode on this tour so it brought back great memories. The songs are timeless and sound better on every live dvd they release. I purchased the deluxe version because you get an extra dvd that has extra performances, a documentary, 2 cds and the videos from the Tour of the universe cd that were not shown on MTV. I have seen Depeche Mode many times, and this was one of the best tours they have ever embarked on. Next to meeting them, which I did, the shows were an amazing experience. I recommend this dvd to anyone who is a true DM fan!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Look at Depeche Mode in Concert February 8, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The band is awesome! David Gahan, Martin Gore and Andrew Fletcher are at their best and stage presentation is mind blowing. This concert dvd/cd set is a definite must for any devout Depeche Mode fan! Buy it as soon as you read this! I cannot get enough of it. Second dvd in the set lets you look at the inner workings of the band and the trials and tribulations they have
gone through to make their career a successful journey for all sincere fans to follow. I am still mesmerized by entire set of
songs and concert presentation. Depeche Mode is my favorite band and thanks to David and Martin, I have developed a unique voice that one day will be noticed. The entire band is definitely a musical wonder to behold!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Is this Blu-ray or Blur-ray? November 12, 2010
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
I have been a DM fan since 1986, they are my Beatles or Rolling Stones. I love everything they release. This Blu-ray is good but there are things that are annoying.
One of the coolest parts of a concert is the entrance of the band. The filming at the begining was so annoying I couldn't even watch the whole thing. There was way to much of the fans and not enough DM. This being the bands first Blu-ray release its annoying when any good shot of the band goes blurred. When the person filming finally stops focusing on the crowds cell phones and shows the band he blurs them?

Anyway don't worry it did get better way better! The audio mix I thought was the best yet. Nice rich sound and loud. Dave was awsome his voice I thought sounded way good. Don't let my opinion about the first song scare you, this is still a must buy. It's not Devotional but it is up there. Maybe next time Anton will be behind the lens.
