This review is from: Tour of the Universe: The Journey of a Lifetime: The Recorded Diaries of Leio Scott and Caroline Luranski (Paperback)
One of my all time favorite sc-fi books from childhood. Along with Wayne Barlowe's Expedition. Expedition: Being an Account in Words and Artwork of the A.D. 2358 Voyage to Darwin IV Similar to the Terran Trade Authorities series. SPACECRAFT: 2000 TO 2100 AD; Terran Trade Authority Handbook A narrative linking seemingly unrelated sci-fi illustrations. Here the majority of the artwork is commissioned specifically for this project. It makes for a far more cohesive story.
A seemingly average couple wins the lottery and gets to travel across various star systems. You get xenophobic cannibalistic spiders, ghost ships, militaristic regimes, thinly disguised cold war spy drama and time shuttle mishaps. The writing is imaginative and fun as are the 80's sci-fi illustrations, especially the garishly airbrushed space chicks -- very HEAVY METAL. |
