Book Description

July 1998 Touring the Backroads
Barefoot offers 14 driving tours that showcase the state's role in America's fight for independence. The tours cover colonial history from Brunswick Town, where North Carolinians offered the first armed, open resistance to British colonial rule in America, to Guilford Courthouse, where Cornwallis lost a quarter of his troops seven weeks before surrendering at Yorktown. The tours follow the route taken by the Overmountain Men on their journey to the battle at Kings Mountain; explore the activities that earned the Charlotte area its nickname the "hornet's nest;" and tell the romantic story of the Scots Highlanders led by Flora McDonald.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read on the Old North State's Role in the War!, September 19, 2003
This review is from: Touring North Carolina's Revolutionary War Sites (Touring the Backroads) (Paperback)
Barefoot's book is an interesting read on North Carolina's important contributions to the Revolutionary War.

Whether describing battles such as Guilford Courthouse, Moore's Creek, Cowan's Ford or the homes and gravesites of patriots, the book contains important information of each event and person and clear directions on how to reach the place.

Indeed, if not for Barefoot's book, I would not have the appreciation for the role and sacrifices paid by our early fathers to establish the great country we have today!

Since I live in Charlotte, the book has many times served as a valuable guide for touring the various sites.

Highly recommended along with his similar book on the Revolutionary War in South Carolina

5.0 out of 5 stars Portal to history, April 3, 2010

This review is from: Touring North Carolina's Revolutionary War Sites (Touring the Backroads) (Paperback)
Daniel Barefoot has performed a great service to the preservation of Revolutionary North Carolina history with this effort. It draws you down the road to history, providing a wonderful guide to the past. As a descendant to 4th Great Grandfather (Brig. Gen.) William Lee Davidson and 5th Great Grandparents John and Jane Brevard, the book provides me with a portal to my family's important part in the American Revolution.

I was drawn past my passion for my own family's story to those of so many others and the profound sacrifices that were made by all. Barefoot provides not only the location of pivitol Revolutionary sites (that could be forgotten otherwise) but also a descriptive glimpse into the impact the Revolution had on the lives of those who sacificed so dearly for the birth of our Country.

I had the extraordinary opportunity to hear Daniel Barefoot speak at the 225th Reenactment of the Battle of Cowan's Ford at historic Rural Hill. He brings his passsion for history to life in an extraordinary way. His respect for those who came before us brings them back to life and generates a patriotic passion in us all.

We are fortunate, indeed, to have a person such as Mr. Barefoot as an author on this subject. I recommend this book to all lovers of Revolutionary and North Carolina history and to those who have a passion for preserving the Southern Campaign's part in the American Revolution.
