Book Description

Touring the Backroads September 5, 2000
Many historians believe the fortunes of the American Patriots during the Revolutionary War turned dramatically on the battlefields of North and South Carolina. This guide travels to such sites in South Carolina as Cowpens, Ninety Six, Camden, Eutaw Springs, and Kings Mountain. It also includes relevant historic sites in many of South Carolina's towns, including Charleston, Columbia, Winnsboro, and Georgetown. The tours also incorporate anecdotes involving some of the important players in America's fight for independence, including Francis Marion, Thomas Sumter, Andrew Jackson, Henry Drayton, Charles Pinckney, and Henry Middleton.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read on the Revolutionary War, September 19, 2003
This review is from: Touring South Carolina's Revolutionary War Sites (Touring the Backroads) (Paperback)
Barefoot's book contains valuable and interesting tidbits of many important events and battles that took place in South Carolina. Since the state supposedly experienced more Revolutionary battles than any other state, it is fitting that such a book was published.

I really enjoyed Barefoot's descriptions of the many battles and skirmishes fought in the state and he does a good job of giving the reader clear directions on how to reach the sites. Whether you want to visit the major battles such as: Kings Mountain, Cowpens, Ninety-Six or visit the homes of patriots, Barefoot's book contains easy-to-follow directions and interesting anecdotes of the event or place.

Since I live in Charlotte NC and am close to many of the sites, the book has several times served as a valuable guide for Revolutionary War tours.

Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars SC Revolutionary War Sites, August 24, 2011

This review is from: Touring South Carolina's Revolutionary War Sites (Touring the Backroads) (Paperback)
This book was just what I needed to help in research my family's history. I'm from one of those little South Carolina towns (Kingstree) that usually doesn't have much written about it, but this helped fill in some blanks. I love the fact that the book pays attention to so many obscure events during the revolution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Detailed directions to fascinating places, July 20, 2010

This review is from: Touring South Carolina's Revolutionary War Sites (Touring the Backroads) (Paperback)
My husband and I live in Maryland. Never having done any serious touring of Revolutionary War sites in SC, I bought this book at the shop at the Cowpens National Battlefield, and we have been having a great time using it to find historical roadside markers, cemeteries, and skirmish sites. The directions are very good; at Target in Rock Hill we recently purchased a SC atlas that shows all the state and county roads, and this helps us locate rural roads marked only by tiny black markers. The author's vivid commentary of people, places, and events makes the world of the American Revolution come alive; I read it aloud and navigate as my husband drives along- great fun! I thoroughly recommend this book.
