Enjoyable Read on the Revolutionary War,

This review is from: Touring South Carolina's Revolutionary War Sites (Touring the Backroads) (Paperback)
Barefoot's book contains valuable and interesting tidbits of many important events and battles that took place in South Carolina. Since the state supposedly experienced more Revolutionary battles than any other state, it is fitting that such a book was published.I really enjoyed Barefoot's descriptions of the many battles and skirmishes fought in the state and he does a good job of giving the reader clear directions on how to reach the sites. Whether you want to visit the major battles such as: Kings Mountain, Cowpens, Ninety-Six or visit the homes of patriots, Barefoot's book contains easy-to-follow directions and interesting anecdotes of the event or place. Since I live in Charlotte NC and am close to many of the sites, the book has several times served as a valuable guide for Revolutionary War tours. Highly recommended!

This book was just what I needed to help in research my family's history. I'm from one of those little South Carolina towns (Kingstree) that usually doesn't have much written about it, but this helped fill in some blanks. I love the fact that the book pays attention to so many obscure events during the revolution.

Detailed directions to fascinating places,

My husband and I live in Maryland. Never having done any serious touring of Revolutionary War sites in SC, I bought this book at the shop at the Cowpens National Battlefield, and we have been having a great time using it to find historical roadside markers, cemeteries, and skirmish sites. The directions are very good; at Target in Rock Hill we recently purchased a SC atlas that shows all the state and county roads, and this helps us locate rural roads marked only by tiny black markers. The author's vivid commentary of people, places, and events makes the world of the American Revolution come alive; I read it aloud and navigate as my husband drives along- great fun! I thoroughly recommend this book.

Both the books on the South and North Carolina Revolutionary War sites are amazing. I drove one tour and traveled to other related sites this summer. The material adds so much depth to the experience of visiting the southern operations of the Revolutionary War. Visiting and studying the information took quite a bit of time for me. I am sure, after reading much of the book, that Barefoot went to all these sites. Even if he didn't the research is so well done, it must have taken forever to compile it all.
These are great books and essential reads for the Revolutionary War enthusiast.

Should be titled "Come and get lost in SC!!",
This review is from: Touring South Carolina's Revolutionary War Sites (Touring the Backroads) (Paperback)
We live in the Fort Mill area of SC(just south of Charlotte) and we looked at the directions on the Old Waxhaw Presbyterian church that served as a hospital during the war. The directions using SR 29-775 was the first red flag there is no 29-775 South of Andrew Jackson park there ia a 755 that we figured out was what the author was meaning. Well after following the back roads he described using 29-755(not 775) and 29-35 we figured out author Dan Barefoot must live on another planet, we were nowhere near where this church is and the kicker his map shows the church to the east opf 521 and the written directions take you to the west of 521!! And no one uses these SR numbers down here, all the roads have street signs with names like Waxhaw Creek Rd. You ask someone down here were an SC rd # is they'll give you a blank look!! Here's the real kicker anyone living here knows go to Lancaster take hwy 9 west and it's five miles down the road on the rt (Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church). Which is nowhere nearly as complicated as where this book tells you to go! I am convinced the author wrote the history (which is the same as what is written in other travel guides) and never really drove the routes!
